A buddy got 2 ASUS 7970s for free (hes a photographer and some promo thing between his company and asus) and he only has one installed. Im wondering if I should buy his spare. He's offered to sell it to me for 300 bucks. However, my question is maybe the yields will be better on the newer cards and I should wait to see a price drop before I bite. Any ideas?

^ This, unless you want to wait another year when the new 8xxx series comes out, then the 7970 will drop to about 300$.

Im not worried about the price drop as much as the performance per dollar.. if my 7970 thats 300 cant perform as well as a 670 or a 7970 thats released in june why should I buy it?

The 7970 will beat the 670 clock for clock and be $100 less.

If you get a good overclocker you can make your 7970 faster then a 680. Big if but at 300 bucks it's certainly a chance worth taking. Even if AMD does release this 1050mhz edition and even if they drop the price to 400 you still got a great deal.

You will not get a HD 7970 for USD 300. Period. biggrin.gif The reaction from AMD is going to be to improve the clocks on HD 7970 Ghz edition to 1050 and price at same or USD 50 lesser wrt GTX 680 (given Nvidia is a stronger brand) . Best price you can expect USD 450 for HD 7970 Ghz edition.smile.gif

Hmm...that is funny.....because according to Tom's the 670 is 15.3% faster than the 7970....

But over here at Anand; http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/7

The 7970 is actually faster than the 670 and EVGA 670 Super Clocked. In fact looking over the Anand review the numbers appear to be a little more realistic and in line with what others are seeing. To say the least Tom's numbers are heavily skewed in favor of Nvidia for some reason.

EDIT: I apologize, I read the review wrong. The one I was looking at on Anan was at 2560x1600, at the 1920x1200 the 670 does pull ahead a little. Which does bring up an interesting point, Tom's didn't show a comparison of the 7970 and 670 at 2560x1600. That is a little misleading on their part to leave that out, when they ran the 680 vs 670 at those resolutions.

But aren't you cherry picking parts of the review? I can do that also (5760x1200):

Nvidia Wins:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/9
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/11
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/12
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/13

AMD Wins:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/5
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/6
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/14 (2560x1600; 680 Wins, but this is about the 670)

They are both great cards, but people will pick the one that is $50+ cheaper, even if they have to wait. AMD has a bad rep for their drivers (11.x drivers were great, 12.x support has been lacking).

A 7970 for $300???....That is what we call in the business a "no-brainer".... hell if you don't wish to buy it...I WILL gladly do so....
