I am sure Marilyn Monroe was not the only woman with curly blond hair and red lips either, but she sure made that look incredibly popular.
Same case here, everyone will look at the HP Envy line and think Apple Macbook

Apple is able to push those kinds of boundaries because they know that no matter what people will buy their product. The other companies... not so much.

That doesn't mean they aren't still innovating, its just that much of what they product never reaches the consumer. They show most of their stuff off at CES, months before Apple reveals their similar products. CES had Android tablets before anyone even knew whether Apple's new tablet was going to be the iPad or a $1000+ touch screen Macbook.

eg. In 2007, a full year before Apple unveiled the original Macbook Air, Intel created this "Metro" concept:

VoodooPC(one of the few premium PC vendors aside from Apple) used this for the basis of their Envy 133:

(Oh and for the record the Envy 133 was still .06" thinner than the Air that came out half a year layer.

And lets not forget this little gem, which Sharp released in 2003!

Look familiar?

The only difference between these laptops and Apples is that they didn't have hundreds of fanatics queuing up to pay thousands of dollars on launch day just so they could have the latest accessory from Sharp or Voodoo.
If Apple started selling junk products then people will stop buying them. You're correct that they have a huge following but that's because they consistently produce devices which millions of people like, and since they release such devices each year, millions line up to buy them. Just because some people think those devices are useless doesn't mean those consumers are blindly purchasing a product.

What a horrible argument. People buy junk products all the time. Have you ever gone into a grocery store? I bet you have and buy junk products all the time. I bet you buy junk gas too.

Glossy finish. Trackpads are noticably different. HP does not have the ugly looking side speakers.

Are you even trying?

Your Raiders argument is a really bad analogy. Raiders, NFL is a sports team sports league. Has no conflict of interest with Apple. They can probably sue Apple if Apple store employees wear black and silver uniforms. HP and Apple have a direct conflict of interest, they are both makers in digital devices and in this case a laptop that closely resembles a Apple product. Oranges to oranges. Guess that's really hard for Apple haters to understand.

How old are you? You still carry a extremely naive sense of righteousness and justice. People care less about who invented it and more about who brought it to light and made it popular. People care about who made it great.

You think people care that a Nazi took the US to the moon? Google up Wernher von Braun. After Wernher von Braun took us to the moon he was no longer a Nazi, he was a national hero, an American.

Why don't you take you and your naive sense of justice and go whine and cry to NASA on why we used a Nazi to take us to the moon. People don't care, people are willfully ignorant.

You are powerless, just a spec of dust in the masses. The internet is nothing more but a place to give people an illusion that they're being heard. Just a portal for people to vent their anger and frustration. To corporations it's just a cycle, people like you whine, cry, complain, protest, petition, go on strike, etc etc it's just a cycle to them. They don't care about you or what you think.

So go ahead, whine and cry some more. No one can hear you, see if anyone will give a crap about naive words on the internet.

There is a reason I have owned 3 HP laptops, A Touchpad, and 2 HP Monitors.
Its called Price to Performance! DV6 with a A8 was one of the best purchases I ever made!

This! Apple needs to stop being a down low kind of company.

@kikkO: Your argument may be valid as far as what people remember or recognize about a product. They may associate this scheme and others with Apple. That has no bearing whatsoever from a legal standpoint though. They do not and should not own a patent for most of the similarities between the designs. You say that is how the world works, etc. It may be how people work, but it isn't how the legal system works. Association isn't legally binding. You are more arguing morality than legality it appears. In that sense, you may have some ground to stand on. This is a legal issue though, and they have no legal right, yet at least, to go after HP for any similarities that may be between the two. There were many older models from non apple companies that had these similarities before or at the same time as Apple. Just because Apple "made it popular" means squat from a legal standpoint.

It seems you never got an answer to this post, so I'll go ahead and answer it for you.

This is actually a very good analogy to the main topic of discussion. Those cars are the same for one reason. Aerodynamics. The Chevy Volt also shares that shape. They did a study and found that that shape yielded the lowest coefficient of drag. Thus that design is a necessary path of technology, like the ever-increasing thinness and material choices of laptops. The thinner a laptop is, the thinner its casing has to be. You're going to get significantly better strength out of aluminum than you will out of any plastic with the same thickness. I would bet that at the desired laptop thickness, the plastics that are typically used would not be strong enough and just break every time you picked it up or while in a laptop bag. I assume it's only a matter of time before companies start offering carbon fiber and/or titanium cases for laptops.
