What a horrible argument. People buy junk products all the time. Have you ever gone into a grocery store? I bet you have and buy junk products all the time. I bet you buy junk gas too.

Glossy finish. Trackpads are noticably different. HP does not have the ugly looking side speakers.

Your Raiders argument is a really bad analogy. Raiders, NFL is a sports team sports league. Has no conflict of interest with Apple. They can probably sue Apple if Apple store employees wear black and silver uniforms. HP and Apple have a direct conflict of interest, they are both makers in digital devices and in this case a laptop that closely resembles a Apple product. Oranges to oranges. Guess that's really hard for Apple haters to understand.

How old are you? You still carry a extremely naive sense of righteousness and justice. People care less about who invented it and more about who brought it to light and made it popular. People care about who made it great.

How simple minded, you guys think this is ONLY about color scheme? I'm sure if Apple did sue HP using just the color scheme wouldn't be a very strong argument.

@kikkO: Your argument may be valid as far as what people remember or recognize about a product. They may associate this scheme and others with Apple. That has no bearing whatsoever from a legal standpoint though. They do not and should not own a patent for most of the similarities between the designs. You say that is how the world works, etc. It may be how people work, but it isn't how the legal system works. Association isn't legally binding. You are more arguing morality than legality it appears. In that sense, you may have some ground to stand on. This is a legal issue though, and they have no legal right, yet at least, to go after HP for any similarities that may be between the two. There were many older models from non apple companies that had these similarities before or at the same time as Apple. Just because Apple "made it popular" means squat from a legal standpoint.

It seems you never got an answer to this post, so I'll go ahead and answer it for you.

This is actually a very good analogy to the main topic of discussion. Those cars are the same for one reason. Aerodynamics. The Chevy Volt also shares that shape. They did a study and found that that shape yielded the lowest coefficient of drag. Thus that design is a necessary path of technology, like the ever-increasing thinness and material choices of laptops. The thinner a laptop is, the thinner its casing has to be. You're going to get significantly better strength out of aluminum than you will out of any plastic with the same thickness. I would bet that at the desired laptop thickness, the plastics that are typically used would not be strong enough and just break every time you picked it up or while in a laptop bag. I assume it's only a matter of time before companies start offering carbon fiber and/or titanium cases for laptops.
