Sata III PCI cards

Hello OCN,

I was just wondering about your thoughts on the topic of this thread.

I am trying to take the cheaper route of buying a converter rather than a new motherboard. I've had my I7 920 for four years and don't see any real gain in buying a new 1366 board. However, the only thing holding me back from purchasing a SSD right now is the fact I'm still using Sata II on this motherboard.

The card I was looking at, in particular, was:

Any input is always appreciated.

Don't let the name fool you. Cheap pci-e cards usually perform far worse than native controllers on a good motherboard. An SSD will perform much better on a native Sata II port than on that card. I'd say get the card if you don't have enough Sata ports but if you're doing it purely because you don't have Sata III, then I'd say save your money because there will be much greater latencies and a highly crippled top transfer speed as well as an added card will have much greater overhead usage. Or get it if you think you can return it easily if you're not satisfied after testing it.

I would only ever use an added sata card to hook up either optical drives or purely storage HDD's. Always put your C drive or anything you want to have low overhead and reliable speed on your native ports.
