Viewfinder shows less of the image than the actual picture.

Thread Starter
I have a canon D1000, my friend has a Nikon 5100.
We both have the problem with our viewfinder in that if we have someones head at the top of the viewfinder and take the picture, the person has a lot of headroom in the actual picture.
To get the image we want, we have to cut the top of the persons head off in the view finder to get the tight shot of the person we were going for while still showing all of the persons head.

Is this typical with all cameras and is there a way to fix this or is this just the nature of the beast?
I have not tried live view to see if the problem still persists.

Viewfinders on most crop cameras only show between 94 and 97 percent of the total frame. You can find the spec for the 1000D in a review or on a spec sheet.

7D has a 100% viewfinder.

One of the reasons I got it.

It's very common on most lower end cameras. So you have to adjust your framing and composition for it.

Only very slightly, and it's only critical if you want an uncropped 3:2 print of a shot -- which is pretty uncommon.
