Questions about EVGA X58 SLI and FTW3

Thread Starter
Hey guys and gals,

I recently grabbed two EVGA boards for a killer price and I had a few questions related to ram utilization.

I was wondering what a reasonable amount of ram would be. I am just trying to figure out how much ram this set up can utilize. I don't see a reason to toss 24gb of ram in if it doesn't have the ability to fully utilize it.

The SLI won't post and it appears to have bent pins. The FTW3 looks like some of the pins might be slightly bent, but it posted fine.

Hopefully the adjustments I made to the socket will get it to post, but I'll save that for tomorrow. This project is still hit or miss, so feel free to offer up your advice or make suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Plasm

PS. To put it plainly, I haven't the slightest idea what the timings on ram do or mean, so ram utilization and bandwidth are beyond me at this moment in time.

I have both those boards also in rigs in my bedroom and a second in my basement for lan parties. Throw either 6 or 12 gig's in either of them. I've found corsair xms3 has had the least amount of issues in my case. Both boards didn't like 4 gig modules, i had nothing but headaches. Wehn to 2 gig sticks and problem solved.

That's interesting. Glad I got around to posting before buying my ram then. I was looking at tossing three mushkin 1600 blacklines in each. Has anyone gotten these boards to work well with 4 gb modules? Thanks for the input, if I don't hear of any success with 4 gb modules, I may just stick with the 2s.

I've built 2 systems for friends using the LE anf the LE with SATA 6 and USB 3.0. The boards worked great with the G.Skill Sniper LV (Low Voltage) series. Both builds are running 6x4Gb DDR3 1600. The only trick with running 6 modules is that the QPI needed to be bumped up to 1.225v from the 1.10v at default.

For every day use I recommend gettin 3 sets of 2x4Gb and splitting them into 3x4Gb for 12Gb per board.

Thanks for the input. Now that I've heard from someone else's experiences with these boards, I'm not a reluctant to take a chance with 4gb modules. The only question would be which of these sets would be best? 6x4gb G.Skill Ripjaws 1333, 6x4 G.Skill Ripjaws 1600, or 6x4 Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 1600

This is of course with the intention of splitting them into two 3x4 sets per board.

Thanks again for all the help.

I would get 1600 kits because of their price and the headroom they will give you with overclocking. The 1600 kits seem the best bang for your buck. I've actually seem some 1600 kits on sale cheaper than the 1333 kits.

Sounds good, now my question is, mushkin or g.skill? I'm sure there's a thread comparing the two somewhere, but being totally inept at using forums, I would probably never find it. Thanks for all the input and help.

I have an X58 computer with 6 GB DDR3 RAM. I already ordered 6 more so if your motherboard has the space, get 12GB. By the time 12GB isnt enough, you will be upgrading PC most likely.

I would suggest you get Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 ram (triple channel kit). They are amazing. Check the reviews in newegg!!!

For $10 more he can get the 3x4Gb kit, which is a great investment (same speed and timings, but run at 1.5v vs 1.65v):

I'd get 12. I'd prefer Mushkin but i've used countless gskill sets and they are impressive and cheap....Here's my build. I'm using 12gb of OCZ Platinum. For what i do...12 is a perfect amount.
