[CT] Microsoft Bans Firefox On ARM-Based Windows. - Page 7

holy over reaction batman, that article is full of crap and the title is even more full of crap. MS isn't forcing anything, they just aren't including other browsers in the installer and why should they? Does any other software package come with optional 3rd party components? I get that its cool to hate the corporations but the public reaction to this is almost as dumb as religion.

Why bar Firefox?
Microsoft Deputy General Counsel David Heiner told Mozilla it won't permit other browsers for two reasons, Anderson said:
•ARM processors, which power virtually all iOS, Android, and Windows Phone smartphones and tablets today, are different from the x86 chips that power PCs. The chips have new requirements for security and power management, and Microsoft is the only one who can meet those needs.
•Windows RT -- the version of Windows 8 geared for ARM devices -- "isn't Windows anymore."

Although the reasons about may be exagerated, I dont think MS is doing this because it really wants to block other borwsers. I think they are doing this because they want total control of security. They dont want to release windows 8 and find out a month later that firefox or chrome opened a security hole becuase it wasnt coded well for ARM. Personally I dont think that would be likely to occur but MS certainly doesnt gain any fans by doing this so I dont think they are doing to simply to block competition.

Microsoft has been trying to do this constantly for the past decade and they've been repeatedly shot down.

That is not the case.

With netscape, MS was sued because netscape origionally was not free, and to stop people from buying netscape, MS released IE for free. That is why MS was sued.

What MS is doing now is not the same thing. All the browsers are free so its not killing anyone sales.

No different from Apple forcing you to use Webkit on their platform. Heck, they currently have a monopoly on the mobile space but I see no complaints. Google doesn't allow other browsers on its Chromebooks, so why aren't Mozilla pursue course of action there?

Furthermore, this isn't anti-competitive because:

1. Windows RT won't be available as a stand-alone
2. Software and Updates will only be available through digital distribution channels
3. Windows RT is likely a hybrid kernel borrowed from Windows CE.
4. Mozilla can still release their browser on Windows 8 x86

I really don't care for Mozilla(I prefer Chrome & IE9) as a company because they feel entitled, and that their browser is so superior to the competition(It isn't) They weren't the first to have hardware acceleration, HTML5 support, or the first to have sandboxing(Ironically, IE was the first in all regards.) Whats more is that prior to FF 3.6, their browser was prone to huge memory leaks and performance issues that I didn't witness in IE8.

Its like Mozilla is living in Windows' shadow -- Their marketshare on every other platform is relatively mediocre.

Read up. No Chrome either sounds possible if MS has it's way. And if you're fine with no freedom of choice that's good for you...just don't help it become enforced on the rest of us because others may enjoy freedom. As for the Chromebook thing...they're dead/dying so no point to invest in the effort.

So if there is no direct line of profits monopolies are fine? Wow. What happened to the world? Freedom of choice is dead it seems and people are happy with it so long and the provided form of "convenience" sits well with them.

On a less sensationalist train: I really can't imagine MS being so foolish to risk a likely backlash but who knows. Maybe people really have become much more apathetic.

Maybe this is their way of trying to prematurely create excuses for the horrible sales (in comparison) to its predecessor.

Basically what MS is doing here is using secure boot (which is enforced by UEFI in the BIOS) to enforce that only their software can run on the device. This means that not only can you not run other browsers, but you cannot delete Windows and install another OS. It's a completely locked down platform. Don't like it? Don't buy it. I know I won't.

But it's not just MS. A lot of vendors are starting this lockdown nonsense. They don't want your computer belonging to you, but to them.

So many sad whiners in this thread. Does McDonalds have to sell their competitors burgers in their restaurant? Blackberry has had one browser for as long as I can remember, no one seems to care. Apple has been doing this on their iPod, iPad, and iPhones for years. But that's all cool, right guys? As long as it's not Microsoft doing it, it's ok. You're a bunch of hypocrites. What is next, demanding Microsoft allow Sony to release their games on it's console? Demanding Microsoft release their source code so other developers can have access to it "for fairness". Grow up and get real.

Not a valid comparison

You can always determine someones grasp of logic and how often they base their decisions off of logical fallacies by how irrelevant their comparisons/analogies are. You're are pretty off-base.
