You'd get plenty of OC headroom as well. Not sure why the 3820 doesn't get more love. Guess it's a tough case to make with a 6 core chip just $200 more...

The other reason is that the people who look at that segment of hardware are just going to go all out anyways, and can justify it through use.

Just gaming, so I'm not thinking the extra cost in a different MB/CPU will be worth my while. I know I'll spend a lot on this, but I don't care to thow away money either.

That's totally reasonable. Everyone has to pick a price point that works for them, as there is always something a little better for only $50 or $100 more. It has to end someplace. I just thought I'd throw out the quad core LGA2011 chip as it would give you the PCI bandwidth I would assume you would need with 3 680s. It would be a shame to spend $1000+ on GPUs and bottleneck yourself because you wanted to save $100 by going with LGA1155. That said, if you really only want to go with 2 cards (and don't have some work-related need for quad channel memory bandwidth), LGA2011 is a hard sell.

  • If you get a Corsair SSD, make sure it's force GT, not just Force. Here's a link. There are also a few deals right now on Crucial M4s. You can pick up a 256gb M4 for ~$200-230 right now. As someone suggested, get rid of the velociraptor completely. Not worth it.
  • With a system like that, and with your budget, I'd pick up another storage drive and use that strictly for backups. It's another $100, but with your budget, I'd like the feeling of being protected. You can grab the 2TB samsung for $100 right now.
  • For a system like this, I wouldn't trust XFX. They have mixed reviews, and there are a lot of horror stories about RMAs etc. Last thing you want is for the PSU to blow and take something else with it, then have XFX refuse to honor warranty and/or cover costs of affected components. Grab a Corsair or a Seasonic.
  • As someone recommended, I'd grab 4gb version of the card. Why not look into 670 4GB? Something like this.
  • You need to be more specific for monitors. Your 3 basic choices are: 1) 120 Hz gaming. In which case you're down to BenQ XL2420T or Samsung S27A950D. 2) 1440p gaming. In which case you're down to either Dell, HP or one of the korean monitors. or 3) 3x 1080p surround gaming. There are a lot of options in this category.
  • For keyboards, visit the mechanical keyboard club - a lot of good info there. A filco or a deck legend are two choices that (randomly) come to my head - for no specific reason. There are a ton of choices.

Really nice system. A good X79 mobo is going to be a little pricier, but I'd really consider the added PCI-E 3.0 lanes that you'd get from the i7-3820. That Evga board is one of the best Z68 boards for tri-SLI, but it's still doing more bottlenecking than their X79 board would. And you've already got 16GB of RAM in mind, why not have the ability to add some more later and make a RAM disk? It's just a more future-proof setup in my opinion. I'd also try to get a larger SSD and just skip the Raptor, but I guess that's personal preference. As for the video cards, I'd definitely wait if you have to for a 4GB card, even if you can only get one at first. You'll still be able to set up multiple monitors on these new Nvidia cards, and you'll have a feel for how many more you'll need in the future. I have 2.5GB cards and that's pushing it in 3D surround, especially in games like BF3. Good luck!

I am not sure why I didn't catch the XFX in there, but I can vouch for how horrid their RMA department is. Out of two RMA's I have had to deal with both were the worst experience in my life, on one video card, an 8800 GTX they flat refused to honor their warranty and it took about a month before I was able to get them to comply. They then tried to replace it with an 8500GT as they didn't have any 8800GTX in stock, trying to tell me the 8500GT was in the same performance category as the 8800GTX. Yup, like a Pinto is in the same category as a Ferrari.

/rant

On the keyboard, I can highly recommend Filco. I have their Majestouch Ninja and love it to death, amazing quality and worth every penny. If I had to do it again I would have gotten the ten keyless version, just to keep things a little more centered on my desk.

I'm looking into a corsair 1200 for the Psu. I'm partial to corsair, nvidia, evga and asus products.

I have a crucial m4 currently and love it, so I may just get another bigger one.

And now I find myself looking at the 2011 socket because.....well hell why not? But i cant blow my budget completely out of the water because mustang week is coming up in myrtle beach and I still have a few things I need to do to get mine ready to go.

I'm still unsure on a monitor setup, I'm thinking a bigger HP monitor. They don't make a bezel narrow enough to keep me happy with a surround setup.

You won't see a difference between the 1155 and 2011 socket with what you are doing, none at all. Unless you go Triple SLi, then you will want it for the bus.

As for display, I have never liked multiple display setups, I would just rather have one big display that the imagine is seamless on.

I agree with a bigger monitor.

I would do 3 way sli by the end of the year, but its more likely that I'll just build a whole new rig so maybe I'll just stick with the 1155 for a few months and build another one for Christmas.
