EVGA 580 Cooling

Thread Starter
So I already figured out my problem but I wanted to share...
I got two EVGA GTX 580's 1.5 factory, one bought the first day 580's came out and another 4 months later... They are basically the same, except the backplates have different designs...

I recently cleaned out my computer and dusted out each of my GPU's to find out that they were reaching 97C and 90C top and bottom... After running a demo of 3dmark11, pushing my cards at 99% usage each...
This is way too hot for my taste and knew something was obviously off, so the first thing I did was switch my GPU's in their sandwhich mode... everything was still the same hot temps...

700

Note my GPU's are overclocked to 850mhz at 1.1V...
I also used MSI Afterburner to set a custom fan profile (every % increase for every degree C)

So I put my GPU's back to stock and they were still hot (94C and 88C)???

I then started paying more attention to the monitors and found that the FANs were NOT going beyond 85%...

So then I uninstalled MSI Afterburner and used EVGA Precision X and setup the same fan profile...
Also found this pretty cool Android app for Precision which is really good and shows all the status of your cards on your phone. But this needs to work through bluetooth... But it's accurate and updates in realtime... loving it...

Even after using EVGA Precision X, the fans were still locked at 85% and I started some googling to find this link...

Finding out that my cards are locked in at 30-85% fan speeds, this simply unlocks them all... Ran the tool from the link and it fixed all my issues. Now my temps don't go above 87C and I can monitor them from my Samsung Galaxy S II...

If you don't feel like reading all that, and have a GTX 580 (1.5GB/3GB/SC) and are getting hot temps like me even after cleaning...
Try the EVGA FAN Unlocker tool...

And want to monitor from your Android phone (requires Bluetooth), use EVGA Precision X Android App
