Flash GTX 670 to a GTX 680?

May it be possible to do this? I remember that AMD you were able to flash the 6950 to a 6970 if I remember correctly. I don't think there is any definitive word on this, but what are everybody's thoughts?

I would count on no. Anythings possible, but I wouldn't buy a 670 expecting it.

I think it can be possible to some boards, for exaple : Gigabyte windforce GTX670 pcb is same with Gigabyte windforce GTX680 so we can flash the GTX680 OC bios to GTX670 OC then it will convert to GTX680.

Hardware Canucks in their 670 review said the extra cluster is laser cut and hence unlocking won't be possible.

Whether they 100% know for sure this is true for every 670 core is debatable, but that's the only semi-official mention I've ever seen on the subject.

Thanks, I'm looking to sell my 580 and get a 670 since it's performance is same or better than a 580. Was just wondering if I could get lucky and possibly unlock it to a 680.

I think the answer here actually could be determined simply by checking the version numbers printed on the top of the chip.

The unlockable 6950's and 465's (like mine) had the EXACT same chip versions as their unlocked counterparts. If the chip version varies on the 670, you can be about 99% sure it's laser-cut.

EDIT: a quick tooling around the interwebz has disclosed to me that the chip versions are indeed different:

Reference GTX680: GK104-400-A2
Gigabyte GTX670 OC: GK104-325-A2

So, I'm going to say it's a no-go on the unlocking.

Small problem... The GTX670 is made from the GTX680's that have had disabled shader units due to manufacturing errors (Atleast that's what I was told).
Hence flashing the GTX670 to a GTX680 probably won't, if at all, have any benefits.
I could be wrong though tongue.gif
