My advice would be to read the owners group for both the 7970 and 680, and then make a decision. Pay particular attention to any SLI/crossfire driver issues users are having with each, and possibly any multi-monitor issues if you're going that route:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1232473/official-nvidia-gtx680-owners-club#post_16775196

I've owned both the 680s and 7970s, and ran both crossfire/SLI @ 5760x1080, and I would HIGHLY recommend you sift through each owners group.

My personal recommendation, based on my own experiences with the 7970s and 680s, would be for the 690, even if you're going to be multi-monitor gaming.

I'm sorry but I have been an AMD supporter for quite sometime the reason most people believe that AMD cards graphics look worse than that of Nvidia is because AMD uses marketing strategy to promote their CPU's which in all honesty isnt as great as intel but if you have an AMD core with and AMD GPU you activate something call AMD Vision which is a passive program that works with all games hugley improving graphics output and graphics detail very similar to the marketing strategy of the AMD locked cores where you have to unlock them in bios to actually use your CPU so all people out there who have Intel CPU's with and AMD GPU will suffer from games not looking great but if you actually do get an AMD CPU which I do have then you will see the picture and Graphics detail actually looks better than that of Nvidia I left Nvidia after I owned the 9800GT and AMD hasn't let me down since I just love the pure graphical power of AMD cards. Another thing Im pretty sure that the 7990 will be more powerful than the GTX690 since they intend to keep their card expensive very bold move from AMD but it has to be for a reason.

going either way you are gonna own every games that you can play for years to come. so doesn't really matter which way to go, other factors that may help you decide is the packaging, how much extras do they give you, temps.. how hot could they get under extreme load, saw paul's test from newegg and the temps they got was practically same as a single HD7970 (talking about powercolors 7990) so take that into your accord and make your decision on which way to go, coz seriously.. it doesn't matter which road you take, you will play games no less than 60fps at maxed out settings on the very demanding game you could ever play.

I found the closest real benchmark comparison between myself GTX 690 and one other OCN member with the PowerColor 7990. Seems AMD is not going to attempt to compete against Nvidia's dual GPU with their own if they are still absent from release as of yet.

3930 @ 4.8 / 7990 @ 1175 Core / 1675 Memory P17511

3770 @ 4.5 / 690 @ 1176 Core / 1594 Memory P17011

The 7990 is in a better system, over clocked slightly higher in in both CPU and GPU and scored 500 points more than the 690 in a 3DMark11 synthetic benchmark. Very close in performance comparison and had it been in the same system as the 7990 the 690 would have edged out in front. So there you have it some proof. smile.gif
