7950 or gtx 670? - Page 5

  2. in your previous comment you talk about skyrim that nvidia is better. You can see that a 7950 oc has higher fps in skyrim than gtx670.
  3. Drivers is good with single configuration.
  4. Also if you take the actual boost clock the oc potential of a gtx670 is not so good. Its a good card but 7950 is a beast at overclock.
  5. And you say that a gtx670 is underclock when itself overclock.
  6. Also your statement about the reference cards. My sapphire 7970 reference can overclock way higher than my asus dcII. Reference doesnt mean lower potential, just better utilities.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1235557/official-top-30-heaven-benchmark-3-0-scores/140#post_16995609 for this i would take a 7950

Added numbers to each of your points to make things easier to follow thumb.gif

  1. Yup, i know the gtx 670 scaling is poor. But the 670 can overclock higher than a 7950 so this makes both cards pretty equal in the end. A 670 overclocked to 1250c and 1800m is about the same as a 7950 overclocked to 1150m and 1700m. So the scaling doesn't really matter as i wasn't comparing them clock for clock but at their max average overclock.
  2. When i said that, i meant to say AMD's 7000 series struggles with skyrim in crossfire and Nvidia's 600 series really shines in skyrim in SLI. I agree that AMD has no issues with skyrim with a single card.
  3. The drivers are quite decent with a single card, not denying that. NVidia does seem to update their drivers faster than AMD when they have a problem with a specific game though. This is especially true for brand new games, NVidia normally always has very good drivers on release day and AMD might be a few days to a week behind.
  4. The boost speed is the real max speed of the 670 though. The card will run at the boost speed whenever it's under load. It only drops below the max boost frequency when it doesn't need to be running at that speed in order it to save power, this doesn't hurt performance in a measurable way.
  5. I just meant it was under-clocked compared to where it could have been with a good overclock. That is, in the review it was only overclocked to 1200c and 1555m when it should have been overclocked to 1250c and 1800m.
  6. Generally speaking, non-reference cards are 4-5% better at overclocking than reference models on air. This is because of their better coolers, additional vrm phases, and upgraded PCB/components that give more stability at higher clocks. Just to point something out though, the Asus 7970 CUii that you had, is one of the worst models released. It has tons of issues as you can see on this newegg page (38% of the reviewers gave 1 star). So it's not surprising it struggled to overclock well.

I'm not saying the GTX 670 wins by a landslide, but it's slightly better when both cards are overclocked to their full potential.

If your card hits 70 C which is highly possible throttles your card i think 20-50 mhz down. You must have the right temps and usage to hit max boost clocks

Yes, that's how it works on paper. But the thing is, if you measure your max boost in the same settings your card will see while in operation (ie, same ambient temperatures, same case temperatures) then your max boost is what the card will run at when under heavy load the entire time. The cards currently run so cool that they never get to a point where they need to throttle.

i can guess what card everyone has by reading the info they pull out of their ass. My gtx 670 oced to 1302 boost clock , beat the godforsaken $600 radeon 7970 XFX DD at 1250mhz in 3dmark by over 300 marks , thats not alot , but it should be zero if the 7950 , the next card down , is the badass super jesus beast you all say it is. If I had bought the 7950 and didnt play a crapload of metro , avp , and crysis (I dont play any of these at all if your wondering) , I would be stabbing myself in the face right now. I was so dissapointed in the 7970 , and have been so amazed by the 670 , especially at $399.

If you are using 1 montior at 1080/1200p either card is overkill. Simple as that. When you get into things like Eyefinity/Nvidia surround resolutions, the AMD card seems to perform better in benches. Just depends on resolution really.

Open system benches with controlled ambient temps like in the review expert sites manage easy to trigger the nvidia turbo boost feature. That's not the case with the 99% of regular users who buy this cards.. This feature needs to be turned off for proper numbers. Like I said I take this reviews like a grain of salt. This turbo boost is not 100% all the way and benches seems to benefit from this in short benches.
