When I go back home and visit family and friends, they're all still playing on dial-up/dsl, they can't even dream about cable/fibre even if they wanted to. And as much as I've traveled, I can tell you, the U.S. has a LOT of poor internet in the majority of places. Head outside of the U.S. like my home back in Germany and it can be even worse in some places.

Mainly the people with true high speed internet are in the Cities or small towns around a city, but after that... good internet is a dream amongst dreams.

It is the only choice they had, IMO.

I've heard this all before as well, and then servers go down and you can't play a single player game, people get angry. All I'm saying is that everyone cried foul when Ubisoft did it, and then go out and support D3, hypocrasy at its finest.

As for piracy running rampant, I haven't seen any evidence that it has affected sales of PC games. Pirated games does not mean lost sales. Not that I'm downplaying piracy, it's still wrong.

Right but the vast majority of people either live in a large city or at least a small city that has high-speed internet. I live in the country around a town of ~4500 people and I have cable. Can't help but think you are exaggerating.

Time to meet up with my friend to go to Gamestop!

This exactly

OCN were whining and complaining about ubisoft's drm heralding it as a reason to pirate their games, anyone saying blizzard's drm is less intrusive is kidding themselves. I have never had problems with either drm and I have starcraft 2, assassins creed 2, assassin's creed brotherhood and splinter cell conviction. According to OCN logic when it comes to ubisoft's games, Diablo 3 deserves nothing more than mass piracy.

How about we keep this thread about the enjoyment of a game that's coming out today and not about peoples personal views on DRM? We can argue black and blue, fact is, some people are ok with it and some people arent. We don't need to hear a thousand personal opinions, i'm sure there are DRM threads out there.

Now back to D3 smile.gif

A few things that you don't seem to understand with Diablo 3.

  • It doesn't have a single player feature, while you can play alone in a game, it is fully intended to be a co-operative game.
  • It isn't to prevent pirating of the game as so much as it is a way to prevent hacking. Blizzard is aware that hacking destroyed Diablo and Diablo 2 and they want to prevent that from happening.
  • The Real Money Auction House is fully intended as a form for Blizzard to continually generate revenue off the game. If the game were rampant with hacking this wouldn't be feasible. .
  • The only assets kept client side are visual assets, everything else is done server side, again to prevent hacking, and streamed to the client. This of course requires a constant connection to perform.

What it boils down to is that Blizzard has spent a very significant amount of time on the development of Diablo 3. One of the biggest things the fan base asked for was for them to prevent hacking, and to monitor and stop any potential hacks. One of the most effective ways of doing this is to have everything server side, streaming assets to the client, thus requiring a constant connection. If you want a single player hack n slash with offline mode, be sure to grab TorchLight II. It will have that feature and be a great game as well.

It is the only style of game where i prefer a Controller over mouse and keyboard.
Playing Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2 and Champions of Norrath 1 & 2 on the Playstation made me realize how much smoother the gameplay is and how much easier it is to control your character with a controller.

Not a Racing or Fighter player I see.

You can pirate it all day, you'd never be able to play.

Just because people can play it cooperatively doesn't mean it is intended as a coop game. Many people enjoy soloing diablo 2 at crazy difficulties and diablo 3 will be the same. So I do not understand how you can say it doesn't have a singleplayer feature.

The hacks and stuff really doesn't matter when someone is playing by themselves as it does not effect anybody else's experience. This drm main purpose is to prevent piracy, if they wanted to combat hacks they could have created a system that kicks in when people actually have to go online to connect with other players.

Blizzard easily could have allowed single player without login, that is why I don't support this decision.

There is a simple solution to this. Buy a legit copy and play it 98.9% of the time and download a pirated copy for those extremely rare moments (that people like to whine about yet it hardly ever occurs) when you're not at home and you want to get your fix in when there's no connection available.

The fact that blizzard has said repeatedly they view it as a co-op game with single player elements, makes it a co-op game.
