That is because Diablo isn't a game, it is a franchise with very high brand recognition and reaches across multiple medium. The same thing applies with Nike and other major brands, they can do things others can't because people trust them and know they will make it work.

The fact that D3 beta was as long as it was and only contained.....
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
From start to King Leroic, which you could do in less than an hour

And people played it over and over and over with each class, over and over, the beta testers dissected and devoured every detail of the beta. I have participated in many betas over the years, more than most I think, and I have never seen such a level of attention D3 beta received by testers. Which isn't a surprise because at this point gamers are heavily invested and feel a sense of ownership of the game. This just isn't Blizzard's game anymore, it is Blizzard's and their players, and the sales figures aren't so much sales as stock in that sense of ownership.

The moment pre-order went live on Battle.net I ordered, zero hesitation. I knew from beta that I am going to sink a massive amount of my free time into this game over many other games.

This is why Blizzard can ship the game without single player, why they can take 30% in the AH, and why they can make us wait. Because their goals are the same as ours, and want to deliver nothing but the best.

Unfortunately, i have exams just after the 15th, and then i'm building a new rig. Once all of that is done, D3 goes on the new rig, and it's going to be awesome.

Amazon has cancelled a few CE pre-orders. Was just on their forums and a few people are getting that whole "Sorry" message.

Ugh.

Hope it doesn't happen to me. I ordered March 15th.

Thats what I said, they can get away with it because its diablo 3, but I was responding to someone else who said game devs should invest more into pc gaming after seeing diablo 3 preorders. When no matter how much they did they would never see those figures, diablo 3 is an anomaly.

No, it's not an anomaly.

It's what happens when you offer a good game, support your customers, and try to better yourself.

Something many Publishers & Developers don't care to do.

And something that it's too late for many of them to do. If Ubisoft announced a PC-exclusive title tomorrow that included LAN, full modding tools, dedicated servers, VOIP, no DRM, PC-centric controls and settings, and regular free patches, do you think anyone would really believe them? I know I'd be all kinds of suspicious.

Not really

According to people here valve offers that plus a bag of chips but I do not see their games breaking any sales records. Some games I know of such as the witcher 2 offer this and will never see these numbers, its all about brand recognition.

You are nuts to think it is an anomaly. Blizzard has about as strong of a player following as any Publisher/Developer/Studio could ever hope for or want.

That would be because Valve sells most of their games through their own system and not through amazon/gamestop/EB
