Crossfire HD 5850 Help. Low Card Utilization Issues on OC'ed 4.1Ghz 965 BE

Hello!

I have been trying to get my xfire hd 5850 setup to run properly at stock settings but am only able to achieve 50%-65% usage out of each card while playing bf3 on high. I will very occasionally reach 80% out of each card. With one card OC to 935/1200 I run at 99% usage the whole game. I am using MSI Afterburner to view in game usage and Sapphire Trixx for OC'ing. With both cards installed I have greater frame dips as well (as low as 38 fps as compared to 45fps on 1 OC card). I have the latest drivers and installed them after using driver sweep. The method I used to install my drivers is as follows: Installed both cards w/ crossfire ribbon on freshly sweeped system with all OC'ing software also uninstalled. I then booted to windows and installed the latest display drivers. Then I shut down and swapped the cards, re attached the crossfire ribbon and installed the display drivers again. I then installed the latest 12.4 cap. I get video out of both card. Quite n cool is turned off, I have set my computer to use all 4 cores simultaneously, and have disable upls. I don't believe this to be a power supply issue because I have a power meter measuring my wattage never exceeding approximately 450w. I would normally think this is a bottleneck issue, but with a 4.1 OC I have a hard time believing it.

My CPU is as follows:

CPU
965 BE @ 4.1GHz, NB @ 2.6Ghz
Hyper 212 EVO
AsRock 870 Extreme3
G.Skill 8GB Ripjaws DDR3 1333
Sapphire hd 5850 xtreme / XFX hd 5850- Xfire
Rosewill 630W Single 12v Rail

Any suggestions?

Well, I can tell you that your PSU is more than likely inadequate for what you are trying to accomplish. Just calculating the basics you are around 510-530W. When you overclock those 5850s past 900/1200 and better, you will be making that PSU sweat for sure. If you want to calculate what you need Check THIS out. I'm not that familiar with your CPU, so I cannot really provide any input. I would see what your CPU usage is like during BF3 though. If you are at 98-100% on all cores you may be experiencing a bottleneck from your CPU running Crossfire. Also ensure that you do not have Vsync enabled ingame or through CCC.

That usage sounds normal for CF 5850's at stock speed in BF3 MP high settings. These cards are very capable of running BF3 MP with ultra settings at very good frames.. you just need to get the clocks up a bit more. The cards will run at the speed of the slowest card so you need to clock them up the same amount. For starters you should be able to get an easy 825/1125 on each card and work from there. Gpu core speed is the most important. You'll also need every bit of that 4.1Ghz on the 965 as it will be near 100% on all four cores. Try and get the NB up a bit more too.

That psu is very marginal... don't ever try running Furmark as you'll approach and maybe exceed 630w at stock speeds. I agree with kp.. exceeding 900 core with just gaming will really stress that psu as you'll be needing much more vgpu. I recommend a min of 750w.

As far as install. I use driver sweep and install the latest Catalyst suite just once with both cards installed.. reboot and make sure cf is enabled, disable ULPS in registry.. reboot.. oc away with MSI AB or Trixx. Btw, Trixx beta allows vgpu adjustment on some of the non-reference cards.
