Say what you will about Gameloft, the developer occasionally does a good job of filling the App Store void with iOS versions of console staples. N.O.V.A. 3 [ $6.99 ], the third game in the company’s perennial FPS series is one such title. Capitalizing on the success of the previous two titles, as well as offering full support for the latest and greatest in Apple hardware, N.O.V.A. 3 offers a great action-packed single player experience complete with some very impressive visuals.

Wow... I just picked this up last night and it looks fantastic. I think it's the best I've seen on a mobile device so far...

Here's a few videos from Touch Arcade on YouTube:

Honestly never thought iDevice/Android gaming would reach this level. At least not so quick. Or maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Mmm I'm not sure but I don't think so.

Visuals look nice, but I think touch controls still ruin nearly every FPS experience anyone brings to the tablet/phone environment. Fact being, gameplay needs to be ridiculously lack luster to make up for such short comings. The dynamics of the game just go out the window to be worth anything. I'd much rather have them design the gameplay for skill levels around mouse and keyboard. Make the games challenging for the sake of it being challenging, not because the controls are garbage.

Apple and Google need to come out with an 'official' physical controller which can connect to iOS and Android slates and smartphones respectively, and encourage developers to support it somehow, like with a dedicated page listing all apps that support a controller. It'd make these games so much better, particularly on a nice big HDTV. (I know there are some third party controllers already for Android... but if Google made one and promoted it I think it'd fare better -- that aside, even if they just promoted the third party controllers that'd still be good.)

I'll probably pick it up if it comes to android, because apple sucks.
