sli 480s vs 7970 for surround?

I currently have a 4870 and I am itching to do either surround or eyefinity setup with 3 dell monitors at 4320 x 900. I have three of the dell monitors at the house and will use these.

I am stuck bertween 2x 480s in Sli for $350 +secondary psu $45-50


Or a 7970 that does 1300 mhz. for $430.


I know the 480s perform better but then no upgrade path. Also My current c2d system isnt sli so I would have to wait awhile till I find a deal on a 920 to use sli. vs Instant gratification with the 7970.


Heat with the 480s is an issue. Eventually want to add the cards to my loop which would be cheaper with the 7970 only 1 block vs 2x on the 480s.




Suggestions, comments, Raves?

On water ok no problem believing that. On air, that's just too much heat and the silicon is very sensitive to heat when overclocking.

Idk thats what he said. It will eventually be on water. ANy more advice. How would the 7970 run on 3 screens. at 4320 vs the 480s. PEople say the 480s run out of vram is this true?

I say go for the 7970. There might be some tradeoff in raw performance, but you won't have to deal with SLI issues (such as microstutter) or the massive power consumption and heat generation of two 480s. Plus, with the 7970 you'll have a decent upgrade path in the future.

OK so I am still between these two.

Cost break down.
2x480s $350 and 50 for psu booster

vs


$430 ish for a 7970.

So $400 vs $430

How hot do the 480s really run?

Does anyone have info for running 480 sli surround setup? Like fps or how it looks?
