sli 480s vs 7970 for surround? - Page 4

Thanks I looked at a few reviews and the ati card wins a little at eyefinity probably due to ram by a few fps. Some one however said that nvidia and ati use ram differantly, so the 2 and 3 gb are close is this true?

I also read that nvidia will reduce fps to make the game smoother vs ati and its raw power is this true?

VRAM is VRAM. The game decides what textures need to be loaded into memory and where. Unless the game was coded to handle them a certain way with a certain card (is this even possible?) then probably not.

I have never heard anything on that second point. Vsync kinda does what you are saying there but you must mean that new adaptive vsync which has yet to prove itself.

I think if I dont win theses 480s on ebay for around $350-400 ish I will go with a 7970. With the 670 do any better? I want a 680 but its out of my price range. mad.gif

Get Sapphire HD 7970 OC Dual X. If you get your HD 7970 to 1250 it will beat GTX 680 OC. that should give you a clue that the GTX 670 is not even in the same league. Even a 1200 Mhz HD 7970 will be faster than 1300 GTX 670.

similar avg fps. min fps is significantly better on HD 7970

Yea. I was looking and the 7970 wins at higher resolutions. But I can have the 680 now and for only $400 vs 430 for a 7970. I would like more vram. Plus I can always sell the 680 if I don't like it. Also the 680 cards drivers are not as mature as the 7970s. So Its a toss up. Also when I go sli in the future sli has better support and scaling then crossfire I have been told a 100 times.

I thought you would have already picked up the 680. Do that. Thoroughly enjoying my 7970, but I have no issues with a good deal.
