Scrappy's humble re-build of fenrir.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, Scrappy here with a humble rebuild of my main rig Fenrir.
Purpose of this thread is to not only show off my newish rig but to
ask opinions on a few things I plan to do with this rebuild.
I'm trying to be a little more stylish with this one since I caught the OCN bug.
I am replacing:
cpu- i5 3570K from i7 950
ram- samsung 30nm 2x4gb from gskill ripjaws 3x4gb
psu- hx850 from thermaltake black widow 850w
mobo- asrock z77 exteme6 from asus saberooth x58
and i am keeping:
case- 400r
gpu- pny 560ti
spu- x-fi titanium
ssd- crucial m4 64gb
hdd- western digital black 1tb
optical- asus 24x
cooling- h100 & h60
Here's Fenrir before the tear down:

I was going to go with a rampage board to complete the black and red theme
but thought it would be foolish with ivy bridge around the corner.
Especially with such an outdated platform.
So far all I have is the motherboard.
700
Here are some pics of the motherboard mounted with some cable management
done up the best I could while I wait for the cpu, ram, and psu.

Everything looked like it was going smoothly so far until I ran into a little bit of a setback.
If you look at the picture below, my new motherboard's vrm heatsinks rise a little
bit too high up disabling me from putting fans on the h100 in push configuration.
450
I ended up having to put the fans externally and splicing the cables to route them inward.
In my opinion, it doesn't look all THAT bad as I will also be getting black fan grills for them.
I just want to hear peoples opinions on if it just throws off the whole build aesthetically.
450

Next, I plan to paint my hdd trays, 5.25 inch brackets, and pci rear brackets either gold or silver.
Looking at gold spray paint on google, it looks a little tacky.
What are you guys opinions on the color I should spray paint them to go along with the theme?
567

Lastly, when I get my hx850 I plan to print out a new label for it that is either:
gold, silver, tan, or gray color. What color do you think I should go with for the label?
I am leaning towards gold but it seems like it may be difficult to pull off.
What do you guys think?
For this if you could post a pic of the color you think I should use for this label:
116
I would greatly appreciate it.

Of course any feedback, criticism, opinions, or aid is welcome.
As always, thanks in advance OCN and + rep of course!!!

I was thinking about that but it seems it just wouldn't be enough airflow.
Do you think push pull would be better even with lower cfm push fans?

This is the other label made by mark-20 for the hx850.
if you could post a pic of the color you think I should use I'd really appreciate it.
I want to know what you think would look good.

Also, what color do you think I should use for the case brackets and trays?
If you could post a pic of the color for that it'd be awesome too thumb.gif

Thanks for your input buddy. +rep

You can torch the motor with different RPM fans :/

personally, I can't stand having fans mounted externally like that. If you found a 240 shroud or something to go over them that's a different story.
Gold and silver paints can be quite tacky. If you want a similar "gold" color, you might look into a brass cover or something along those lines. thumb.gif

Well I want to match the motherboard which is black, gold, silver.
So i would guess that black, gold, silver, brass, tan, grey would all be fair game.
I'm looking really for YOUR opinion on what would look good.

I got black fan grills for them tell me what you think.

i actually think its OK looking with the grills.
It's the only choice I have though, using the 400r and this motherboard.
unless there are some decent low profile fans out there but I doubt it.
and by brass cover do you mean brass paint?

Doh! Forget what I said about RPMs.... when choosing a fan for the rad, its important to look at the static pressure. Take a look at my post here:

I'm not a fan of gold but as long as its not a super neon yellow, I'm sure you can pull it off. You should make the logo a duller gold then, lets see what I can find....

if there's no other way to fit the fans inside the case, you might look into a shroud like this..
http://koolance.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=0_54_85&product_id=983

That would make it look a lot better IMHO.. thumb.gif

and as far as the brass i mentioned, you could get a chunk of brass and cut it to fit over the drive bays, maybe polish it up a bit etc.

I'm a floridian lol im in the 727 area what about yourself?
and yeah im going to print out 2-3 labels for my psu to see which colors look best.
havent decided on whether or not i should paint the hdd/pci brackets.
i also have custom aluminum heatspreaders coming for my bare sammys soon.
got a friend who works at a machine shop so hes gonna fab some up for me.
anyways, i ended up fitting the fans INSIDE! and how i did it was i off mounted the h100,
it is a little ghetto but you cant even notice if you dont look real close at the screw mounts.

i ended up fitting them inside thanks for the input!
and what do you mean brass to cover the drive bays? I'm having a hard time picturing it.
Could you explain or sketch something up in paint real quick?

Here are pics of some goodies that came in today guys and also of the rig so far.
Just some aesthetic mods and a nice overclock and she will be ready!
oh and sorry for the delayed response all!
