because OP is buying a crop camera and 50mm lens on crop when shooting indoors is too tight for party and event photography that OP plans to do but its not like they listened to any suggestions given but thats their choice.

I only highlighted that combo, cause it was on a great offer. I haven't bought it. I see you guys all recommend primes
BUT, that's kind of uncomfortable for me, cause i can't really move too much and go around and push everybody to go get a picture. Also, I would buy the D5100 right now, but I don't have the money for that, a zoom lens, a flash and a grip. maybe I could do without a grip, but still, it would go over my budget.

I could also get the D5100 and the stock Nikon 18-55 lens. But, i've been to the yellow store (nikon) and tested the D5100 and the 18-55 lens, but they're awful!! There's no way i could do with them.
.
On the other side, the D3100 with the 18-105 does a really nice job

I even tried a prime on a D7000 and they are high quality. BUT, you have to move to "zoom".

And, to be more precise, indoors is not ALL i'm gonna shoot. I will also go out sometimes to take a few shots. So keep that in mind.

Stop recommending me top gear, cause that's not the case here. Neither the budget!

You're not listening. Everybody has recommended a cheap tele for when you need to zoom and a fast prime for when you don't.

You are mistaking a fast prime like the 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8 for "top gear". Those lenses can provide professional image quality but at a low price.

I don't see how a D3100 body only + 35mm + 55-200mm + some random flash won't suit your needs.

edit: Not to mention if you're shooting in clubs/restaurants, the 35mm would be perfect for food and partying shots.

If you're taking photos at a party of people and you zoom to get your shots, you're doing it wrong. Being in the scene and part of the action makes way better photos than standing from a distance and zooming in.

When I read this, my instinct was to shoot my genitals off with a shotgun. If you feel like a kit 18-55 is the difference between bad and great photos, you'll end up like a ton of other people with thousands of dollars worth of gear and thousands of bad photos.

At this point I feel we should stop wasting time with OP. He seems thoroughly convinced with his decision and only made this thread not with an intent for help, but rather looking for moral support in his purchase.

Yeah.. Thanks for the.nice words.. You see, i keep asking qurstions because I'm skeptical about is.. I don't have a lot of experience. And I talked with other photigraphers and they ALL recommended me the D3100 + 18-105. So that's why i kept bringing it into discussion. I'll just go today and try the prime again.. Maybe i'll get that and the 55-200. But doesn't that go over my budget? smile.gif

You don't need to get the 55-200. I was merely using that as a suggestion for a cheap zoom lens.

In the end, what you're comfortable with is important and if you are convinced on the 18-105 + D3100 then go ahead.

I do however urge you to try a prime lens. The quality of fast primes are so ridiculously good for the price and the only real drawback is you have to use your feet (oh the humanity).

i duno who the photographers you are speaking to are, but they should know that supers zooms are never good. EVER. since ur skeptical of us just buy the d3100 + 18-105 and be happy with it, cause asking again and again will only get you the same d5100+35/1.8 answer.

I can't stress enough, after reading through everyones posts, that the prime is the way to go. In the end it's your decision - your money.

When I started out I bought cheap, there was no other option for me - but I should have bought smarter - i should have bought primes, looking back at my event photography when I started I cringe, it's shocking!

I have noticed no one has suggested a diffuser (or I could have missed it) personally a must for flash photography but it depends on the look.

The flash bender is cheap and very good if you can get hold of one.

In some respects you can skimp on the body but it's always worth while not skimping on lenses.

Check out review sites - a quick google will show you some very repuatable sites where the in depth reviews are great and really informative.

good luck and enjoy, your personality out there will be more important than you possibly realise but that will grow with experience.
