Help me decide on CPU/socket

Thread Starter
Hi new member here!! smile.gif
I decided it's time for an upgrade and I want to start with the CPU, the problem is I dont understand the differences/advantages between todays sockets FM1, AM3, AM3+
and unfortunately(or not? xD) because I live in eastern Europe I have a very limited choice(budget).
Which one of these is best and will serve the longest? (For some reason I got a feeling the FM1 will be a short lived socket, if I can say so.)

AM3/AM3+
Phenom II X4 B93
Athlon II X4 640
Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Phenom II X4 850

FM1
A-Series X4 A3650
A-Series X4 A3670K
AMD FX- 4100

thank you in advance! smile.gif

First of all, the AMD FX-4100 doesn't use the FM1 Socket, instead it uses the AM3+.
If you wish to go with an AMD Motherboard/Processor then I'd recommend the latest AM3+ Socket for performance.
Of course you could also go with FM1 and install APUs in it, but I wouldn't really recommend that if you want to get good performance.

The AM3+ Socket was designed for AMD's FX-Series CPUs, but it's also backward-compatible with older AM3 processors.
So the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU should serve you very well, especially if you're on a low budget. smile.gif

960t would be better, about 5 dollars more, you get the chance of 6 cores, and the better imc of thuban

Indeed, don't get a 955 or any Deneb, get a 960T and clock it to 4GHz.
