VMs or RAMDisks.

Best thing is RAMDisks in my opinion as they definitely put your RAM to use and if you install programs to them then they make an SSD somewhat moot(especially for those who can't afford SSDs). Honestly, the only programs I'm hesitant to install to RAM are MS ones that get updated through windows update. Outside of that...I'd put steam and games on it if I had the RAM. And then you don't have to worry about "wearing" out your super fast program/game drive.

If you can take advantage of it no not at all.
Video rendering, 3D Rendering, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, Flash all can eat up RAM fast when your dealing with high resolution work.

Question here:

Doesn't filling up all the slots actually decrease memory speed?

I know on most of the servers I build for my customers, that this is the case. The only way to get the max 1600 speed is to use one DIMM per channel. Adding 2 dimms per channel drops the memory speed to 1333. The servers I just sent out were actually running at 666 due to the fact there were 12x 4gb Dimms spread across 2 cpu's. With 16gb (4x 4gb) the memory was running at 1333 (according to memtest).

Thoughts?

Lol, raid0 doesn't work that way.

I use mine for GNS3 simulations between VM's. Currently using it to practice MPLS implementations, but I keep running out of RAM.

This won't be a problem on any regular PC.. I have my 1600MHz memory OC'd to 1650 due to a FSB increase on my OC and I have all four slots filled.. 2x4GB and 2x2GB sticks.

It depends on the BIOS. Some mobo makers revert the RAM frequency to the OE default frequency when all RAM slots are filled to prevent RAM errors as there is more load on the IMC. CPU-Z will tell you the actual RAM frequency quickly.
