SSD stuck on sata 2

Thread Starter
ok i just decided that i wanted to put my 2 agility 3 SSDs into raid 0 while running sata 3 and from what i can tell its still in sata 2.

l have the sata 3 cables in the sata 3 ports and i think i have all the relevant mobo setting in the bios its using a marvell controller and im pretty sure its not the sata 3 driver cause i had to install that after windows

i've never done this before is there something i'm missing/doing wrong?

my mobo is a ASUS Sabertooth X58

Did you make sure to install the latest motherboard drivers and maybe even a BIOS update?

How can you tell that it's still SATA 2? If it's because it's not quite as fast as you thought it should be, that can actually happen with the Marvell controllers, really the ideal controllers are the Intel controllers, which I don't think they had on x58 unfortunately. I myself accidentally installed my SSD into the Marvell controller on this board at first and I wasn't running as fast as I thought I would be. Changed it to the Intel controller and it all shot right up.

If you get some benchmarks using CrystalDiskMark someone should be able to tell you if that's a normal speed on a non-native controller.

That is all the speed the marvell controller can handle, you're stuck with these speeds just like me mad.gif

Also try using them in the native Intel controlled SATA 2 ports... Should give better results.

It is a joke that they add those controllers on to say that they have SATA 3, when the only real SATA 3 controllers worth their salt are the Intel ones on newer chipsets and the high-end PCI-e models that you probably can't boot from anyway!

Yeah, those speeds look about right for a Marvell controller unfortunately. Even though they are in RAID, I believe the limitation of the Marvell controller is in the connection between the CPU and the controller, something you don't get with Intel's controllers.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you'll be able to get anything more out of it. In fact, but I would wait to see if anyone agrees with me before doing anything about it, I think you may even see higher speeds using RAID on the SATA 2 ports from the Intel controller since you won't have the same bottleneck between the controller and CPU that you do with a 3rd party one like the Marvell. Based on my math, 3gbps is roughly equal to 370MB/s, closer to 300MB/s after other losses, for SATA2, for each drive, so in RAID you may see around 500MB/s on the Intel controller. This is all speculative though and I would wait for opinions of others before rebuilding Windows or anything like that.

Even if each channel is at 3gbps you should be seeing more speed than that in RAID. That says to me that the limiting factor is the Marvell controller holding the drives back. In fact, those Marvell controllers are attached on a spare PCI-e lane, so the PCI-e lane actually limits it to a theoretical maximum speed of 500MB/s anyway, taking into account overheads etc. you're already very close to what that controller will be able to allow through that connection.

It is possible that there is a BIOS setting that could enable SATA3, but you won't see the performance you're looking for. As I said previously, the Intel controllers don't have these external limitations and should be able to give you better speeds in RAID.

If you post some pictures of your hardware configuration settings in BIOS we can have a look for these settings, but given that you're using RAID, even SATA 2 in RAID will be exceeding the maximum possible speed of the PCI-e bus that the controller is on, regardless of overheads.

You're better off using the Intel Sata2 than the Marvel Sata3 IMHO.
Especially on my board the Marvel chip gives less performance than Intel's Sata2...
