Not that surprising, considering AMD's head start with the 7xxx series. And the increase costs in mass producing gk104 chips, numbers should rise soon enough though.

This usually happens when you announce products and you don't have enough supply for the market, and then.... keep announcing more products and still not enough supply for those frown.gif consumers buy something else , until you can figure out to have your product available.

Exactly. There was no feasible way they were going to hit any sort of good numbers without having had the 600 Series out yet - there wasn't anything new to sell. I fully expect a different story in Q3/Q4. The article is a bit sensationalist in that regard - what, did anyone expect Nvidia's profits to INCREASE without a new product line while the 7000 series was already out?

Guys, if you have Nvidia stock, quick, SELL SELL SELL!!! Their profits took a nosedive in...THE FIRST QUARTER!!! rolleyes.gif

this article says strong Q1, but still not as good as years prior. I think they have more riding into the tegra chips taking on than the video card market these days.

I dont even see a reason to buy an nvidia.. seems like the ATI gives more performance for a lower price, and nvidia dosent support running three + monitors off a single card while ATI does.

See, this is why articles like this cannot use the first line with any sort of BOLDED point. It doesn't paint the entire picture.

The original article is talking about a 55% decline in profits for Q1 2012, because Kepler was non-existent and production costs were high due to low yields/supply.

So, the profits decreased, but overall revenue is still expected to increase, which is the next part of the article, and is what WSJ is talking about:

Quote:
Looking ahead, the company forecast revenue for the second quarter well above the Street expectations. The company's shares are gaining more than 9 percent in the pre-market.

Quote:
Nvidia, which originally provided a downbeat view for the first quarter, reported revenue at the top end of its guidance. It also projected fiscal second-quarter sales of $990 million to $1.05 billion, above the $976 million ...

This is why Q1 results are generally meaningless. I take it back, the article wasn't sensationalist at all - the thread is just entirely misleading. If you understand the market at all, the situation is not anywhere close to as grim-sounding as, "Nvidia Profit Plunges."
