So is that why Client 1 is still having issues, because its trying to still use local resources? Or could it be because I'm wireless on Client 1 (150Mb I believe...its a wireless N card).
What can I do to make this function? I just want basic remote desktop 1080p playback capabilities on Client 1.....so basically I just need the server to process everyhing, not the clients.
I don't know about the resource usage bit (I'm with you, I don't understand why usage would be that much), but I'd be willing to bet at least some of the issue (if not most) is the wireless connection you're using. What's the bitrate of the 1080p files you're trying to play? Because with overheads, your 150mb might only allow you 14MB/s actual transfer speed.

However, that wouldn't explain the constant and ongoing lag of audio with video (that points to some other resource issue).

I just tried disabling aero on the affected machine (both local and in the VM), didn't change anything. The video plays for about 5 seconds or so, then bugs out for 5 seconds, then plays fine (rinse and repeat). OR, it'll play fine the entire play time, but the video will be playing slower than the audio.

Not sure on the bitrate, but these are 3-4GB files. confused.gif It's been a while since I added these.

The wireless network card is reporting 144Mbps according to Windows, and full signal strength. So that could be an issue I suppose. The other machines that I tested are all wired, and all with 1Gbps wiring.

Even though its only a 100Mbps wired connection to it, since that's all its got onboard? Before you say PCI slots...they're fried, don't ask. tongue.gif

There is more noise in a wireless connection than a wired connection. More noise = more chance for dropped packets. And since UDP does not care about dropped packets, they will be lost and you will see lag because you didn't receive the data.. I have never had an issue with remote desktop with 2 wired computers, but with wireless I have always had lag... :/

Hmm...bandwidth is probably not the issue--could still be wifi-related (maybe the card isn't the best--your the router? I've read on occasion of people having problems streaming 1080p content via their wireless and having quality problems even though their bandwidth should be sufficient--sometimes due to other network load, if the router is chugging).

Is it svchost.exe that is using most of the RAM on your AMD 3300 system when you try to stream to it?

Not sure, but that might be your problem. The wired v/s wireless part.

I'm pretty sure the bitrate of your videos isn't that high as to exhaust the maximum bandwidth of your wireless connection.

EDIT: guyladouche beat me to it.

I do this exact same thing that you have here. I have my FX 8120 (local machine) it is a quad core now basically and i have my pentium 4 and athalon connected via rdp to the local machines vm's. (each is a dual core essentially) I also had wireless on one of mine and had similar issues. I went and bought 2 gigabit lan NIC's and installed in the aged machines and problems solved. You would think that the 150mbps connection has plenty bandwidth but apparently not. I will try to help you out if you have any more questions but I'll be honest, I am pretty sure I got lucky setting it all up. I can be playing batman AC on the local machine and my wife and kids are both streaming HD movies simultaneously. It is truly brilliant setup. I also have anoter pentium 4 that i might just try to get on jsut to see if my bulldozer can handle it. Good luck and hope you get a grip on the resource issues!

I'm pretty sure the bandwidth is sufficient. Blu-rays generally have a bit rate of about 40 Mbps. 150 Mbps is more than sufficient.

I can't stream anything over 720p to my HTPC on wifi when file transfers are around 4-5 MB/sec, and even then sometimes it pauses for a moment at certain places..

100 mbit would still be a lot faster than your wifi that is reporting at '144 mbps' wink.gif
