[ZDNet] Ed Bott: When I say 'virus,' you know exactly what I mean - Page 5

Virus is a generalized term..."All of the above", which shouldn't draw a huge debate. I mean, it is what it is, Malware are Viruses. Anything that doesn't belong on the system and/or tampers with the system or steals information is considered a Virus in general to me. At the end of the day, what does it matter, its something that someone else made to compromise security of systems and it just doesn't belong there.

I remember when a virus was really that, nothing more than a program that replicated itself a million times to fill your hard drive for you. Amazing how times have changed... viruses arent even viruses anymore, they're now programs that people willingly install from trusted sources and don't even realize it! Viruses weren't that big of a deal as they were exactly that, a replicating piece of code that tries to take over. Now we have data miners and all this other crap that actually does steal our info and give it to the big companies who actually own these virii. Take me back to the old days thanks!

If I say " I need a vacuum flask " 90% of the people reading this thread have no idea what I'm talking about. If I say "I need a Thermos" 99.99% will know exactly what I need. Basically the same with Malware and Virus.

Good luck with that even some of the mods are anti-Apple.

So far we've had a good discussion with minimal issues.

I'm all for defining malware properly (i.e. Trojans, Worms, and Spyware.) but this persistent and sometimes willful ignorance makes defining things to a point unnecessary and can take way from the overall impact in discussion.

I can agree and disagree in how the ignorance is further perpetrated by the media. They are using terms familiar to the general public. The problem lies in their interest for the topic at hand, and what relevance does it matter to them. To be fair, it doesn't matter that they know the difference between the tower and hard drive. If they are technicians, then it matters. To make a previously stated analogy, I don't prescribe myself medication, so it's not necessary for me to determine weather or not I have a bacterial or viral infection.

The point of the article is to illuminate the unnecessary and intentional deviations caused by defining terms in an effort to detract from the overall topic at hand, which is security.

When you type in "desktop computer diagram" into google images?

Steve Jobs got people to say the monitor/screen is the computer because that is what you see when you use a computer. PC people have always referred the tower/box as the computer.

Now we have Mac people try to make huge distinctions between viruses and malware. tongue.gif
