Workstation, 3D Rendering build $4000 budget

I am working on a workstation which will be used primarily for rendering in 3D.

How does this build compare to something like this?

obsidians have next to 0 air flow,, i would never get one for air cooling

save 400 and get yourself the 3930k. they overclock all the same

1000 watt is overkill, get like a 750-850 and save 100 or so.

that cooler may be to big and go over the ram. you should get like the hyper 212 and maybe even get a rasa watercooling kit. they are only ~140 and will make a world of difference.

you can definitely save some money and be just as well off even maybe better off. just because you have 4g's doesnt mean you need to spend it all unless its not your money lol

no! that is a terrible box for any 3d work for $4k.

First off opterons are too friggin slow in 1 thread afaik all AD products have maximum 1 thread per viewport and same goes for rig dependency and modifier stacks. Would help to know which rendered you use but given this setup i aimed for cpu power im going to assume either MR or VR - both of those use 1 thread for lightmapping, scene composition, displacement and any kind of geometry spawning. Huge amount of crappy cores does not a good developing machine make! Working on this would feel like working on an old c2d....

Obviously you'd expect this machine to redeem itself in them long renders that take hours and days but no, If you are just looking for a render machine network together a bunch of 2500k's on a skeleton setup for 400 bucks a node - you can get 10 i5's for the same money = 40 cores of 3.3ghz i5 instead of 24 cores of 2.6ghz opteron.

Secondly the quadro/firegl are both the worst waste of money ever. For one the flagship quadro is almost 2 years old, its geforce counterpart is the gtx480 and not that nividia would thell this to you but both max's nitrous viewport and mayas vp2 gain nothing from the driver optimizations on the quadro while when using their d3d modes the performance gains are roughly 10% over the gtx480, for the record firegl cards are even worse. At this point for 1000 bucks you can get either a gtx690 or a quadro 4000, the gtx690 is around 5 times faster, nuff said.

Oh ya if you are thinking about the only advantage that quadro still does have - its huge memory for gpu rendering, well it is worthless since both vray rt and iray both still suck balls. Why do they suck? Well aside from their lack of support for... anything you still have to fit the entire scene in the ram which is kind of hilarious since that is the selling point of quadros/firegls these days and at the same time the very reason why nobody can actually use them.

Third 8gb of ram, wat the fak. It is not unusal for stuff like h&f and sss to gobble up 30+gb on a 1080p frame. These $400 skeleton 2500k's i was talking about would even have 16gb (and they would only need it for 4 buckets). For that amount of money get at least 32gb of ram.

Abandon this crap box and get a nice 3930k box for developing and a bunch of i5's for rendering.. or if you must have a 2p box due to intels stubborness something based on sr2 will still yield the best bang/buck and even if it has just 12 cores it will still beat the opterons when overclocked.

Oh yea i forgot to mention, as far as bang/buck for sheer rendering power goes - cheap am3 board + phenom2 x6's still have the crown since you can build a render node for $250 but they have no upgrade potential for future whatsoever. Bulldozer compatible board + bulldozer also make a more cost efficient node than i5's but the electircal bill after first big render will even that out.

oh wait i thought the linked box was the one you wanna buy who-let-rip-smiley.png well you know my opinion on the linked box... as for your setup
the WS on the board is pointless, for what you are doing its no better than an ordinary p9x79
3960x is also pointless, get a 3930k and spend the rest of the cash somewhere else
SSD eh.. matter of taste, personally i have no use for them
64gb of ram is thumb.gif
FirePro card is a turd, as explained above just get a nice geforce of radeon.

As for how it will perform - well it will render around 2x slower but cost 4x less not to mention that you can actually render stuff bigger than 8gb on this box...

try looking for a second hand or used video card. Those kinds of cards are extremely expensive brand new.

also look around the M4 goes for $200 a lot now a days.

This isn't my money, it is a client build and he wanted to get the most he could for $4000, I should probably ask what programs he will be using specifically. As for the workstation card, would it be better for me to have something like x-fire 7970's?

As for cooling, I think I will go for the corsair H100 instead

Depends on what kind of programs hes using and what kind of work he does, for regular shaded viewport (like almost every 3d program out there) or spitting out orthographics in cad a single gtx580 is enough to display more polygons then the rest of the computer can handle. For shadowed and AO'd viewports (like max nitrous or maya vp2) the more force the better obviously.. However fancy they might be though most of the time people who work with 3d stick to simple shaded modes since the shadows and AO get kinda annoying.

I'm somewhat in this field and don't know of any program that can utilize X-Fire. It's always single card solutions that you need.
