The man who made it went to work for Valve. His work goes with him

That makes no sense to me at all. How can anyone believe this is how things work? Take Diablo for example, the original people who made it no longer work for Blizzard however they are able to call it Diablo still. Take the Call of Duty games, I highly doubt the original people who made the first one still work for Activision yet they can still call it Call of Duty.

Take all of the EA sports games. Take all of the Need for Speed games. Almost every game/movie/tv show, or any other form of media has "sequels" and very rarely do the original people all have something to do with them, yet the company they were under is almost always able to keep the name.

That's not the case here. Dota was a custom map in Warcraft III. Blizzard had no right to use the Dota moniker, considering Blizzard had nothing to do with the mod's creation.

They should have bought rights to DOTA if they wanted DOTA. They can't just take it. Same goes for Valve, but oh wait?

Blizzard never had anything to do with DotA, at all. The creator of DotA made it out of Blizzard's map editor. Blizzard had all the time in the world to do something, but didn't. It was not until he took his game to Valve, when Blizzard through a hissy fit sued Valve.

That's just the way I see it.

This is how I would see it as well.

umm.....so who sued who?

I'm not gonna comment on who deserves the name. I actually found that "blizzard suing Valve" to be more justified than "valve suing Blizzard"

My response to both situations would be :

Blizzard suing valve : well....the game originated as a map in our game, and blizzard has disclaimer that they own all copyrights of things that get created through their program? So it might actually be a good fight

Valve suing Blizzard : ........why not just have Blizzard dota as dota 1 and Valve dota as dota 2? I mean valve is ALREADY naming theirs the dota TWO?? Wonder where that TWO comes from huh? What's all the fighting about? Bunch of kids......

Coined it as a custom game on a Blizzard game. To me, this is complete b.s. Maybe not from a legal standpoint, as I have no clue to the intricacies involved, but from an in general standpoint. How you can make a custom map on a game someone else made, then popularize it on their servers, then take it to another company, and in the end make them change the name of their stuff for it... everything up until creation of a new game for valve was done on (modified) blizzard resources. Now a name thats been associated with Blizzard for about 10 years or so is unable to be used by Blizzard. that's just crazy talk.

That's just the way I see it.

IceFrog, Guinsoo, and Eul were never employed by Blizzard.

Doesn't even sound like a good title if you ask me. Probably coulda saved themselves two headaches by picking a different title to begin with.
"All Stars" doesn't impress me much either.

It make sense if you have actually played the game. As others have mentioned All Stars was another version of DotA but IceFrog has since dropped that from the name. It is simply called DotA or Defense of the Ancients now. Not talking about Blizzard All Stars, of course.

Dota 2 would be bad on Battle.net 2.0. BNET is complete garbage.
