Problem?

PC gamers have had to provide servers for themselves for years, and now the console gets the same treatment and we are supposed to be shocked?

That's the main point I gathered as well.

I don't see the problem at all. Welcome to the real world, where things simply aren't free.

Free Servers? Where?

PC gamers paid for their servers from day 1 and paid the same retail price as console gamers.
All things equal IMO.

EA is removing server support very quickly compared to past BF console games.

Edit: Here is an updated statement from EA.
Quote:
[Update: Electronic Arts has now provided GamesBeat with an official comment on this issue:

"DICE is not shutting down servers. If DICE-managed servers appear unavailable, it is because they have been rented and customized by players. DICE will continue to add servers and will reserve a percentage of servers for players who prefer to connect through DICE-hosted servers.

Custom Servers have always been extremely popular with Battlefield PC players. With Battlefield 3, we’ve introduced a Custom Servers program to console gamers. Response has been overwhelmingly positive. Custom Servers gives players the ability to tailor the settings and parameters of a given server, which directly affects gameplay. It also gives players more choice as they select which server and gameplay style they like best.

As with any new innovation, there may be some confusion among players who are experiencing Custom Servers for the first time. We encourage players to use server filters and “favorite” options to find the servers that best suit their play style. We have enormous respect for the Battlefield community and are listening to the feedback. It is our #1 priority to ensure all players are having the best possible play experience."

We have requested further clarification from EA about the addition of DICE-hosted servers and are awaiting a response.]

Perhaps EA/DICE got negative feedback?

I'm so confused why people are irate about this...

Doesn't this allow the game to become "immortal" on consoles like they can be on PC?

The ability to rent a server on PC allows the game play to last as long as the community does. Hell, look at BF2, that game is still alive and kicking, and that is in no doubt thanks to servers rented by the community.

In this situation I foresee a long-term benefit to players. Plus, lets be real, 24 slots at $30 per month is not nearly as bad as it could've been. Based on current competition though, it should probably be right around $24.

I guess I'm surprised it's taken this long for online console games to start charging for online play. Hosting games is not cheap, particularly when you are only getting 24 players on a single server (virtualization can help this a lot, however)!

(P.S. I feel like this is deja vu... Didn't EA already announce they were going to do this?)

I commend EA for doing this. They are showing the beautiful ways of Capitalism. If people are willing to give massive amounts of their money for nothing, then take their money and give those people nothing! The general masses are using their wallets to vote, and their votes are telling companies like EA to continue to create poor products and sell them for high prices. Corporations do not care about petitions, complaints, protests, and bad press. All corporations pay attention to is the Wallet Vote.
