ASUS HD6950 doesnt seem to be performing as well as it should

ALright, so I have had the ASUS HD6950 for about 8 months now, and while it is a pretty decent card, I have noticed that it doesnt seem to be pulling its weight.

When playing games such as BF3 and Crysis 2, I can't seem to get more than about 40-50 frames per second at best. In BF3 I have all my settings as high, with AA X 2, if you're wondering.

Yet my friend who has a GTX 570, can play BF3 with 60+ FPS witrh AA off and everything else at ultra. Which seems odd to me, as my card should be slightly more powerful.

DOing some googling, it seems I'm not the only person to have such issues, across multiple games and setups. SO I'm just wondering, is it an inherent issue with the 6xxx series? Or are most games optimized more for nVidia and AMD users lose out?

It's annoying, since this card is a good card and it wasn't exactly cheap, and I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth out of it. At the very least, if I know it's a common issue, I'd feel a little better.

AFAIK 570 is 10%-20% faster than 6950 according to benchmarks, I wish I got that instead of the 6950 2gb. I has been a small disappointment for me as well.

OK, I just did a 3Dmark 11 test (free version so only ran at 720p) and rthese were my results

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3402971;jsessionid=104joamp3gx916wgv2vgucntc

Seems to be fairly standard from what I've read, sadly.

You expect a mid range part to get high FPS in BF3?

Turn off the AA and watch your fps "skyrocket"

It's not exactly mid range, since it was one of the higher tier cards in the 6xxx series.

And my FPS doesnt go much higher without AA, plus it makes the game look like ass without it.

Have you done any overclocking? On air my 6950 was a beast, on water it OCs so high I'm content to wait for the next generation of graphics cards to upgrade.thumb.gif

Only on my CPU. My cards voltage is locked, so I cant change it too much. And I dont really want to flash the BIOS, just in case it goes bad, cos I cant afford to replace it if it does.

That's unfortunate, at the default voltage I can't do much more than 900/1325 but when I bump it up to 1.2v I can hit 990/1380 or more if I turn up my fans to LOUD wink.gif.

Edit: I'm still afraid to try to flash the card to a 6970 redface.gif

Ive tried 900 before, but my display drivers crap out after gaming for a bit, and I cant really increse my memory clock at all sadly.

Thats rough, have you tried MSI Afterburner in its "unofficial OC" mode? That's how I unlocked my voltages on this card, I'm told it works for most 6950's but you have to edit the .cfg file to enable voltage changes.
