First overclock i5 2500k asrock p67 extreme4 gen3

Thread Starter
[Components of my build
asrock p67 extreme 4 gen 3 motherboard
i5 2500k processor 3.3ghz
noctua nh-d14
corsair dominator 4x4gb speed set to 1600 las 7-8-8-24]
core temp atm
low 29c-30c idle
high 35c-37c idle.
is this even a good temps, for the heatsink i have?

How should I approach overclocking to 4.2ghz or 4.5ghz?
Any guides, or tips would be much appreciated.

I have G Skill RAM and the NH-C14, but otherwise the same components.

This seems to be a popular board/processor combination, yet it doesn't seem as if there is an agreement as to how exactly to approach this. I have browsed a lot of threads that are easy to find with a search of the board and processor model together. There are a lot of differing opinions on how best to do this, but the consensus is as always, keep the voltage as low as possible, change in small increments, and test for a long time using prime95 and the Intel burn test.

Another issue that has been discussed is manufacturer variance- some chips simply won't clock as high as others, even with the exact same settings. I personally can't get it stable past 4.4, but like I said others with better chips have achieved 4.6 and high with close to these settings.

I have to admit I was a little disoriented switching to SB architecture because I am used to clocking up the FSB and so on. Anyway it's running prime95 right now with the following settings:

Under OC Tweaker:

Max Ratio: 44
BCLK: 100
Internal PLL Overvoltage: Enabled
Speedstep: Enabled
Turbo Boost short and long power limit: 250/200
TB Voltage +0.04
Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Power Saving: Disabled
Vcore: Offset, -0.060
Load Line Calibration: Level 2
DRAM Voltage: 1.5V
DRAM Timings: didn't mess with this
PCH Voltage: 1.012
CPU PLL Voltage: 1.857
VTT Voltage: 1.116

You shouldn't need to mess with any other settings in the BIOS. I have to say I like the new style of BIOS.

Let me know if this helps.

And your temperatures are far into the cool zone. I am getting a little twitchy about seeing 70 under load but apparently even that is fine.

I changed offset to 0.060 because this chip seems particularly power hungry but it tested fine all night.

Vcore offset of 0.050 is yielding lower voltages and temperatures under load. I guess it still needs some tweaking.
