You seem to forget that, according to HWBot, the 7970 averages a 20MHz higher OC than the 680.

you confuse not knowing with not caring. HWbot is the 10% of overclockers, which is 10% of the market that would buy either of the card. My numbers might be a bit exaggerated, but my point is still valid. Unless you can filter out all the LN2 and Dice entries, the pool isn't valid for comparison.

(For reference I don't care which is faster my next upgrades's workstation cards XD )

Will there be a 660 Ti? Or is this it and the actual 660 will be less.

They should make a 666 edition though, some insane marketing and performance, would buy.

Just look at this site. There are way more people with 1250+ OCs on 7970s then 680s. And that is with the 680 shipping at a significantly higher clock speed.

Voltage is locked on the 680 so this should not be a surprise to you in any way. You take voltage away and install a 4 phase VRM and overclocks will be limited. My mother could probabally deduce that one. This is part of the story that is constantly overlooked in the Tahiti/Kepler debate.

I'm not disagreeing. I'm simply pointing out that saying even our community representing a majority of the consumer market is laughable. (Just like 4 phase VRM I was so disappointed with that one.) But never the less, at least half of the buyers of gaming cards are not going to OC.

EDIT: We are gonna get in trouble because we're making this into another 7970 vs 680 thread....

I disagree. You can look at past examples such as the 560 ti being clocked higher than the 580, it's obvious that the smaller less complex chips can clock much higher than the bigger ones. We've also seen with the 670 that the performance loss when removing SMX units does not scale linearly. I think people put too much value in SP count, when in reality ROPs and texture units are where the bigger performance losses can be found. We don't know anything about those specs, but if they choose not to disable many of those, and clock the card in the 1100-1200MHz range, I could easily see this card running with the 580. There are certain things that it won' t be as good at, but it could definitely compete with the 7870 if other parts of the chip are well thought out.

What a lot of people forget is that Fermi Cuda cores and Kepler Cuda cores are pretty much exactly the same, the biggest difference is that Kepler does not use hotclocks, so it requires twice as many cores to achieve the same result clock for clock. That may seem like a bad move, but it clearly has paid off with GK104 because the cards are very fast and efficient. It seems the lack of hotclocking has allowed the chips to realistically run an unusually high clock speeds, which can only be better on a less complex card.

Dude, you're right. The mass majority of computer noobs who buy these parts would probably be better off with the 680 since it is faster at stock. But that has absolutely zero relevance here on a site DEDICATED to overclocking. For people like us who push our cards there is a negligible difference between the 680 and the 7970 (and the 670 is behind both)...

660 vs 680: half the CUDA cores, 24 vs 32 ROPs, 192-bit vs 256-bit, $300 vs $500.. sounds pretty sketchy, and with the 130W TDP it sounds more like a 7850 competitor (even the 7850 has 32 ROPs, though it has half the GCN cores still). Maybe this is the 660 SE.
