X1950 Pro giving headaches :/ - Page 2

post #11 of 22
^^^ Thank you.
Now, what is your budget available for a possible replacement video card. If it is the video card that is bad.

His motherboard has these slots on it:
Expansion Slots
1 PCI Express X16 slot
3 PCI Express X1 slot
3 PCI slots

Yes, PCI is older than AGP, but PCI Express is newer.

However, as stated. That video card is very old. X1950 is from around 2006-2007 time frame. Which with the way technology goes, is pretty ancient.
If you are stuck with a AGP slot video card. There are still viable solutions for you. But if you have a PCIe slot available. There are more options to help you out.
Edit: Just saw the post below. Will update the link

Thanks for the reply Rebelord, I took a look at the newegg link and from the looks of it, the 50-60 dollar cards have lower rating than mine accordling to

how come ><...

Well, from the specs of your motherboard, you have a PCIe slot available. Which opens up your options greatly for a newer card.
Which video driver version do you have? Because on thing with the older ATI video cards, is they do need to run legacy drivers. I believe 10.2 is the highest you can run. You may be able to run newer sets of drivers, but compatibility is definatly not going to be guaranteed.

This is what shows for the video card... I'm cant really find the catalyst driver thing you guys mentioned...if that's the one you meant

Here is the link for the legacy drivers: ATI 10.2 Drivers
I run the whole Catalyst package. I know for sure they work. They are running in a old Dell here at my house, with a ATI X300 video card. Windows 7 32 bit. Runs it like a champ, full aero package and all.

Rebelord

Ill be out for awhile, but ill check this thread a lil later.
Try the drivers, might help. Read up on here how to do a full driver uninstall, driver sweep then reinstall. To try to help, plus pick up CCleaner for a possible registry clean. However do, do a backup before you clean it. If uncomfortable, then dont do any registry cleaning.

I believe it's AGP, but my hardware knowledge is very limited....isn't PCI an older slot than AGP?...

Sounds like we got a rookie, pci is ancient, isa is even older, agp was the old graphic port, pci-e has surpassed all previous ports. If yOur stuck with a agp mobo, but dot want to do an entire upgrade, then you could scope around for an agp 3850, it brought my system life back in early 2007.

Yes sir...quite a rookie here, but never too late to learn isnt it thumb.gif
It appears the motherboard does have PCI-E slots, so I guess there's more options to it
Thanks for the suggestion smile.gif

What is your PSU ?

It could be a problem related to the power supply.

If you want to play the latest games I suggest you:

a) buy a new graphics card. If you want to stay with AMD, you can start looking at the cheapest one in the HD 6000 series, the HD 6450, and go all the way up to the HD 7750. I don't think you should spend more money than that on a graphics card unless you also upgrade your CPU;

b) overclock the E4300 or upgrade to a faster CPU. Even a Pentium E5700 would be a great choice. Of course, if you can find a second hand faster Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad for a nice price, the better, and it will open up the options for a faster graphics card than the one I suggested;

c) upgrade to 4 GB of RAM.

These three upgrades should make your computer last another year, or even more, depending on what you upgrade to.
