Is constantly changing brightness of laptop harmful to screen?

There's two buttons on the laptop that increases/decreases the brightness/backlight of the screen.
I was going to use it as a second monitor for a guide or something while I play games on the desktop.

Is constantly changing the brightness of laptop going to be harmful to the screen?
I was thinking of installing some program that would just let me switch the screen off, although I think that might be worse.

I remember setting a screensaver on my old 18" monitor, and the screen would go blank and then the screensaver would pop up.
I would usually be playing on a handheld so I would move the mouse and the screen would go blank again and then the desktop would return.
I think this stressed out the monitor too much and a couple weeks after doing this, the monitor died.

I definitely don't want this to happen to my laptop (HP DV7).
So when I use it as a secondary monitor, should I even bother changing brightness/using a program to switch the screen off (to save power, and it is also a bit distracting)?

I've never heard of this happening/being detrimental to a LCD. Maybe you were just unlucky that time?.....but I'm not an expert on mobile stuff
