is an ssd really worth it (for me)

so heres what i use my system for: tons of torrenting, general use, programing, and for media center like stuff +folding. i never reboot. i use linux. ive saved about $75 witch is enough for a 30gb ssd after tax and stuff where i am. because i dont use windows, this is enough for my two oses and the majuority of my programmes. so, is it worth the money? will i notice a differance? im just thinking cause the lag i get from my sata1.5 hard disk is very annoying. i was looking at the corsair nova series 2.
sure there is a difference.. in booting, loading apps/files etc installed on the ssd etc.. about torrenting.. since the internet isnt still fast as a sata drive there will be no difference in this matter.
the thing is if you ever come to the idea to use windows again.. i´d buy a 100+ ssd but this is much more expensive :/
is there any other thing you would need the performance from an ssd?!
You should easily be able to get a 60GB SSD for that price. It makes a huge difference in windows, not sure about linux though.

and for $75 you can get at least a 60GB ssd if you look around imho.. why settle for a 30GB.

$75 after $10 in shipping, and another $10 in tax. If i found a cheap 60gb for $75, it would be $100 on my doorstep. Thats what i mean. $75 to get it to my pc. Its actully $45 after rebate if youd like to count it like that. Now, no need for 60 both my oses and programes take up less then 30gigs of space now, andthats with 8gbs of swap which ive never used. Linux is not a pig like windows. Also smex, im going to stay as far away from windows as i can get. Never agian. And Im not dumb i know it wont help internet, i was just listing what i do. The biggest problem with my drive right now is the lag. I click firefox or deluge or banshee, and i wait for a couple seconds for it to open. I dont want that. My question: will the ssd compleatly get rid of lag, even if its only sata 2?

Very little difference, I suspect. Linux already does proper read/write RAM caching. It flushes things to drive slowly, so writes rarely cause lockups/stutters like they do on Windows. Reads will definitely be faster - but more RAM would also cure that, since you don't reboot...

Nope. Or at least, it wouldn't on Windows.

I use Chrome and Firefox in Windows 7. On my HDD Firefox took about 2.5 seconds to start. On my SSD it takes about 1.5 seconds to start. The rest of the time must be CPU time, which can't really be lowered further.

Chrome on the other hand... starts in 0.5 seconds on HDD, and 0.5 seconds on SSD... again, CPU limited.

I'd suggest tossing Firefox into a RAMdisk if you can. Test and see if it starts quicker. If it does, then an SSD may help. If it doesn't, then other stuff is limiting how fast it can start, and the SSD won't help.

One area where the SSD will help tons is multitasking with programs that flush stuff to drive far too often. (causing excessive drive I/O)

A 30GB SSD isn't worth it. You'll want to put programs on it not just the OS and 30GB is barely enough for an OS.

If you're going to get one, get a good one. SSD prices are falling quick so just wait it out. I got my SSD about a week ago and I'm loving it. Chrome is basically instant for me. Too close to record. Booting is really fast (the longest part of my boot is the POST)

@Kramy What are you doing with close to 10TB of hard drive space?!
