Corsair 550D Owners Club - Page 26

I was using a modified LIAN LI PC-8FIB, I had replaced the top with the top from a PC-P50 so I had a few fans going, my AMD 955 was cooled by the Corsair A-70 with 2 AP-15 and the other 5 were the Noctua NF-P12, temps at idle was 35c and the noise was good, almost dead silent, the problem I had though was dust, lots of it as well as those massive dust bunnies on the front and top covers and the filters having to wash out every 2 weeks.
When I seen pictures of the Corsair 550D a while back the case looked clean with no filters or grills showing, just the kind of case that won’t show all the dust bunnies on the outside. My main goal in a case is noise and dust, I’m not into over clocking so a raise in cpu temp wasn't of any concern to me, I also wanted to use less fans, I have the 2 120 mm Noctua in the front of this 550D, a 140 mm Noctua on the rear exhaust and another 140 mm Noctua on a COOLER MASTER GeminII S524, so I went from 7 fans on my Lian Li to just 4 fans on my new 550D. Right now the cpu temp at idle is 40c, I can live with that although I might at a later time go with the newer Noctua fans and a different cpu cooler just because I can.

Nice setup. You have two optical drives?
Asking because, if you have two optical drives, and only two disk HDD. Could mount the disk HDD up top also and eliminate the lower HDD cage. Just a thought for an idea.

How do you like those Noctua NF-P fans? Pretty quiet even on the front? I am asking because I am running the H100 up top. But would like to get quieter fans overall for the case.
Running stock case on front, YL 140mm mediums on the side and rear. YL 120 high speed on the radiator.

Rebelord, if the 550D had a window I might have moved the hard drives to the top for looks alone, I would have done a better job with the wires also but as I get older I care more about the outside looks more than the inside. The other thing is with my history of never being satisfied with the cases I put together it's a sure thing I will be changing what I do to this case in the coming months. biggrin.gif

Yea. Same here. Worry more about exterior looks.
I moved all my drives up top myself though. Mainly so that the front fans have clean direct flow to my GPU. Since I fold on it for TC. So, its always at full load. Plus, I do have side fans on.
This is what I used to move them up top. But removed the fan as its blocked anyways. XIGMATEK HDD Cage

Rebelord if you are looking at Noctua's for you H100 look at the F12's They are designed for rads and preform amazingly.

Yep. What I am looking at. Then the NF-P fans for the case. But, will have to wait till budget allows. Considering its $50-200 for fans. Depending on how many I get.

Take it one or two at a time. I have 7 P14's and 3 P12's. I sure didn't buy them all at once.

Hello, long-time lurker looking for input... I've read all the posts in the thread and have something different to throw out there.

I've been researching a replacement case for my lightly modded CM Storm Scout. I need more room, and less noise.

The 8th expansion slot of the 550D will come in handy because my EVGA X58 SLI-LE motherboard has an odd PCIe lane configuration and I need to use the bottom slot (it's x8) for my 2nd GTX 580. Right now it's almost touching the other one and I can't run some games at highest settings because the GPU's get too hot.

With 8 expansion slots I should be able to have 3 unused in between my GPUs - I'll be ordering a 120mm long SLI ribbon connector to span the distance.

I plan on putting my 2 x 1TB mechanical drives in the 5.25" bays using these:

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11757/hdc-77/Akasa_HDD_Cooler_Anti-Vibration_Suspension_Set_AK-HD03-BK.html?tl=g34c273s852

...and mounting my SSD on the side of the 5.25" bay area the same way I am currently doing in my Scout - trying to keep 2 bays free, one for my Samsung Bluray and the other for a fan controller.

I'll keep using my H60 with push/pull fans as a rear exhaust, but I don't want to use fans in the case's side or top locations to keep noise down.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

My thoughts for best GPU cooling are as follows:

As the front fans are somewhat restricted I was thinking of Dremelling all the crossbars out of the 3.5" bays and mounting fans on the backside to boost the intake fans.

Thinking of using Corsair SP120s in the front of the case and AF120s as booster fans.

Do you guys think this will provide a better cooling solution that simply removing the 3.5" bays and relying on the front fans by themselves?

(BTW - one thing I absolutely love about the Corsair 550D is that every single part is available separately directly from Corsair's parts store - I plan on getting an extra front door and extras of all the plastic panels that cover the intake locations behind the front door, the side panel, and the top of the case. I want to experiment with various mods for both appearance and a little bit better ventilation. Also want to make custom case feet.)

The front fans actually do very well. If anything try just running the stock dront fans with the cages removed and see the temps.
If anything might have ti remove the side panel for just ventilation

That's easy enough to try at first - I'll see how my GPU temps are first.

I just have little faith in them because even with much experimentation with their fan profiles and an additional 140mm case fan in my Scout they run very hot.

I've never even been able to experiment with O/Cíng them...

I really don't want to remove the side or top panels for any reason, however.
