Corsair 550D Owners Club - Page 42

I have the 550D at home but after doing some customer builds with the Fractal Designs R4 Black Pearl... I don't know.. I am not sure if I shouldn't have bought that case instead. It does seem thicker though and I keep my case under my desk, sideways because of a crossbar at the bottom of my desk. So perhaps the 550D works better for me

The R4 has waaay more drive sleds though.

The internals of the 550D are much more pleasing, if you ask me.

Although, the R4 probably has more cable routing space. If the R4 could fit an H100i and the motherboard I'm going to be using for my next build, I'd probably have gone with one of those.

I had to make this decision back when I bought my case, and a few things about the 550D stood out for me. They were minor details, but enough to warrant a purchase from me.

The R4 IMO is too wide; I don't need that much space behind my mobo, and my cables are managed fine in my 550D

The R4 Harddrive cages are not removable

I liked the internal layout of the 550D a bit more.

Both are solid cases, but I don't regret getting the 550D one bit.

Soon I'll will do something with the top case fan grill, but that comes later...
That is a good idea if you have one of those.

That front panel mod is pretty cool. I want to do a similar mod for a side window on the 550D.

Not only are the R4 HDD cages both removable, the top can be rotated 90deg and the bottom can be moved closer to the PSU in order to fit a radiator up front.

I do like both cases quite a bit, but I felt it was necessary to mention this...

Oh oops, I must have been thinking of the R3. I remember that was a thing back then.

That makes sense for your setup. I have an hx750 too, but never planned on adding more fans.

I dropped 10-15 degrees C per drive, the drives see to perform better when cooler, but I haven't done any before/after testing. Though I might be moving the fans off the drive cages and putting them on the side panel, because my CPU/GPU are running a bit warmer than my old case which had front/side/rear fans. I may just get 4 more fans and keep the ones on the drive cages and add fans to the side/top. I really don't care about noise, my old case was dated and bright freaking yellow.
10-15 degrees?? How hot were your drives before?

My drives right now are only 20-25C in the first place.

Hey, yeah they are the upgrade kit. Only downside i found though with the kit was that the sata cables are all 5 plug, where as the original pack had some 2 plug ones which would have made cable management easier on the back rather than having unused plugs protruding. Ah well.
