HELP: Fan Noise Level 6x GT AP-15's Or 3x GT AP-30s ?

Thread Starter
Hi please see the following specs of the GT fans which I will be putting on a 360 radiator
but have a question about the noise level.

Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm D1225C12B5AP-15
Air Flow : 57.6CFM
Speed: 1850rpm
Noise: 28dBA

Scythe Gentle Typhoon 120mm D1225C12B7AP-30
Air Flow : 116.5CFM
Speed: 4250rpm
Noise: 44.0 dBA

As you can see above the AP-15’s have a noise level of 28dBA while the AP-30s have a noise
level of 44dBA. What I was thinking if I go for only 3x AP-30’s running at full speed would they be loader then having 6x AP-15’s running at full speed? I have had 6x AP-15’s in the past in a push/pull configuration and found them not to be to load at full speed but I was wondering at full speed what the AP-30’s would sound like? I no this doesn’t work like this but 6x 28dBA = 168 while 3x 44dBA = 132 I mean if the AP-30’s noise level is the same as 6x AP-15’s I would defiantly go with the 3x AP-30’s since air flow and speed is much better and I will have them inside the case pushing air out instead of on the top pulling air plus I have read these fans have good static pressure. smile.gif

AP-30s are substantially louder than any number of AP-15s at full speed.

it doesn't work like that. noise rating in dB is calculated by logarithm.

+3dB = twice the noise.

so,
1. 6 x AP15 = 28 + 6 * 3 = 46dB
2. 3 x AP30 = 44 + 3 * 3 = 53dB

the noise difference = 7dB = about 5 times the noise on the latter setup.

loudness = 7 = 10 * log (absolute noise of AP30 / absolute noise of AP15)

inverse logarithm gives
absolute noise of AP30 / absolute noise of AP15 = 5

AP30 setup is 5 times noisier.

+rep. Someone paid attention during math. Lol
