the phenom ii x4. the c2q is close but on a dead socket, were as you can upgrade to piledriver or something with an am3+ board

the phenom ii by a sizeable margain at stock, and the phenom ii again at the same clock by maybe %5-%10. unless you can find a c2q for like $30 we'll all tell you to go with the phenom ii x4

Being a Intel guy I would say the Intel but being this is real world the Phenom II is faster.

Here's a bench of the two along with others.It is not a huge margin but a good sized one.Like mentioned before using a AM3+ board you can always upgrade to a better chip in the future where on the Intel side you can only go just a bit better with a old socket.One other thought is what video card arrangement are you gonna use.If you are gonna only run a single card or crossfire then you have a more open choice of motherboards.Many AMD boards are crossfire only.
