compiz cube broken on gnome 3?

is the desktop cube messed up in the new linux distros? I downloaded every compiz addon and icon tried both linux mint 11 and ubuntu 12.04 and i cant get the cube to work? the cube is err.. flat it unfolds? and it doesn't rotate redface.gif

also most of the other compiz effects don't work or glitch a bit its like it doesn't want to interact with the newer versions of Linux?

any ideas? on mint 10 i was using the cube fast and fine on a lowly laptop. I much prefer it to simple workspace swap, looks flashier on my htpc biggrin.gif

if none work is there another alternative piece of software that can do cube effects on linux?

on windows 7 i use:

deskspace

http://www.otakusoftware.com/deskspace/

its really good once you set a few things up, it allows for specific programs to always load in defined spaces thumb.gif

Could be as simple as the keyboard shortcuts have been changed or as difficult as missing drivers for your hardware. Without more info on your hardware its kinda hard to say. Mint and Ubuntu are basically the same distro as Mint is built upon Ubuntu repositories so I would suggest doing a search in those forums for an answer first.

doesnt work on my intel core duo laptop integrated graphics OR my desktop Amd 1055t + HD5850 setup ?

keyboard shortcuts, tried many many times !

its from a fresh install, with latest updates and all compiz extras even dev package all from the package manager.

so both separate machines, opposite sides hardware and two different O/S ?

next...

ohh btw tried on gnome classic and mate and it still doesn't work which is meant to fix problems?

Did you make sure to start compiz?

As dumb as it sounds, gotta start at the beginning lol.

Only if it's set to ( at least used to be that way ) I haven't used it for a while ( since the old gnome 2.3x days ) but if you didn't set it to auto start with or without your window manager then you would have to use the compiz shortcut that should be somewhere in your programs list. Should be named something like " fusion-icon " last I remember.

May be different though as again, this was a while ago when I last used it tongue.gif

thanks for the replies shrak, ive been on the mint forums and there is problems with compiz and gnome 3

it seems gnome 3 broke a lot of customization of gnome 2

hopefully mint 13 will return with something more complete

and as for ubuntu with unity .. horrid.

I didnt want to use windows for my htpc build as its another £100+ for windows 64 professional ((for GPO support / auto launch and logins)) and then £20 for deskspace which is the same price as a amd FM1 and llano APU !

still you pays your money you takes your choice

Mutter the window manager for Gnome 3 is incompatible with Compiz, same with Muffin the Cinnamon version.

You need to use another DE, Mate, XFCE, LXDE or KDE, if you want Compiz to run.

The problem is the number of virtual desktops you have defined in compizconfig-settings-manager. If you don't have this installed, go install it. After you do, then open it up and go to the "General Options" section. Open that and go to the "Desktop size" tab. Then adjust the number of desktops upward (try horizontal first).

This will fix your problem with the "flat" rotating cube. It's flat because you don't have enough desktops defined. Once you set it to "4" you should see a cube. You can set it higher as well.
