brettjv's 470 SLI vs 670 Bench-Off (both OC'd) ... (Now with 7970 OC'd!) - Page 4

Poll Results: What are you thinking: Used Fermi for SLI, or go with Kepler?

  • 18% (20)
Thinking of getting adding another cheap, used Fermi for SLI!!!
  • 64% (70)
Thinking of selling my Fermi and going with Single High-End Kepler (670/680)!!!
  • 17% (19)
Thinking of waiting to see what lower-end/cheaper Keplers bring to the table!!!

Oh, I am just too late to make a suggestion as you have already done the 470 SLI benches.

Basically, I predict the benches will be very close (+/- 5%) between 470 SLI and a 670. The 2 major categories that distinct the latter from the former is the heat and power consumption. So, I was hoping you would record the temperature and power consumption numbers.

Windy if I had a Kill-A-Watt I'd have done the power measurements for sure thumb.gif

AFA temps go, the toughest tests were 3dMark11, Crysis 2, and CoP benches ... on those I got up to 92C. Most of the rest stayed between 82-89 on the top card, about 5-6C less on the bottom.

Alli I have to say I'm surprised that the 448's at 797 would've won by such a decisive margin. They should really be the same speed headscratch.gif

I just thought since 670OC ~= 680 stock, adding 680 stock results to this thread would be somewhat relevant. Also, moar data points for overall performance calculations and all that, and I'm curious to see how factory OCed 670 stacks up against stock 680 from actual user benchmarks.

CPU @ 4.6Ghz, GTX 680 stock (max GPU boost 1137Mhz / 3005Mhz memory).

EXCELLENT work Dimmy, thanks!

I know how long that must've took ... from experience wink.gif

When I put up my results from the 670 in the OP I'm going to add your results to it as well if you don't mind.

Really good job on matching all the settings too bud. That's really useful stuff.

Interesting that the one test the 680 wins is Jane Nash. I think I have some CPU BN going on that test actually, GPU usage was dipping into the 80's a lot. Maybe we should try Extreme if you have a 1920x1200 screen?

It's also interesting the amount of variability. Looking at % diffs, the 680 really gets fairly walloped on Metro and CoP (esp. Sun Shafts), but hangs really close on LP2 and Crysis 1 and 2, and the rest it's just behind by a small amount, <10% in the other cases.

I'm hoping the improved smoothness of single card makes up for any loss of FPS I have in the end. If it doesn't, well ... guess I'll have no choice but to get a 2nd one for SLI wink.gif

Thanks again, and everyone give this man a REP!!! That's about 3 hours of work right there thumb.gif

Glad to be of help, I love bench offs. Thankfully, I had half of the stuff already installed from my previous benching, that really helped.

My screen is 1920x1080, unfortunately can't run extreme. And I think you're right about BN in vantage, even on high. I've noticed that when I had two 580s with I7-930 @ 4.0. Yeah, your OCed 470s are no slouches, 680 @ at stock barely keeps up with them. But seeing all the reviews, I have a feeling that overall it'll be a wash between them and your 670.

I ran Mafia II demo for a benchmark (I don't own full game), but the screen with results looks different that yours. Were you running full game? I'm afraid we can't compare those, I got like 57 average with physx maxed. So I didn't include it. Let me know if you want me to add it too. Also, your JC2 result screen does not list bokeh filter setting? Or am I just going blind? Because mine does, and that was full retail game bench.

according to the GTX680 benchies its about 2.5X more raw GPU power then my late 460....

Subbed for 670 results!!!

I have no idea where my 470 SLI benches went, but I did find an old 3dmark11 P score.

To be honest, I have no idea why I replaced my old trusty i7 920. That chip is still a beast.

CPU was:  i7 920 @ 4.4Ghz HT

I think it may be the extra power of the 2600k that did it, but I'm not so sure. I was hoping that a stock 2600k would roughly equal a 4Ghz i7-930, but I could be wrong. Perhaps it's loading everything from an SSD?

Edit: I should keep that pic from Heaven, just to troll people with.. as it's picked up the GMA3000 as the GPU in use.. Which it is, but it's running 2 other displays, not the one the SLI setup is powering.

Yeah that was the benchmark run from the Mafia 2 game itself. The benchmark test is the same between demo and game, but maybe the different versions (demo vs. real) runs it differently thinking.gif As I made note of, my GPU usage was horrible on that test ... 50-70% range for most of it. Running PhysX on one card that's part of a SLI set is a joke, it works like ca-ca ... been telling people that for years. I actually played the game with the SLI off, using one card for rendering and one for dedicated physX. It plays better even if FPS is a little lower that way on average.

And no you're not blind ... the Bokeh filter option doesn't appear in JC2 when you're running SLI.

Hopefully I get a good OC'er, cause otherwise ... based on your results with the 680, I'm probably going to be taking an FPS hit when I move to the 670. But not having a little furnace right next to my leg in the AZ summer is gonna be worth it. Not only that, 800MHz is not my 24/7 clock anyways. It could be, but ... it's too hot here and I don't like to abuse my cards. I did pretty much all my gaming on these cards at 700(1V), so I won't be losing any FPS at all, really thumb.gif

Thanks again man, great job!

Oh, and Youra ... if you ran 3dMark11 again, on the latest version of it w/the latest drivers, you'd easily score over 10K with your old chip ... things have changed since back when you ran that bench in your screenshot. I can crack 10K with my i7 930 at 4.0 and my cards at 830, and that's with only a 11.1K GPU score.

And yeah, even w/Ivy out I haven't been able to justify moving away from Bloomfield/X58 to myself. I really LOVE my board, it cost bank when I bought it, and I just really like having having the triple-channel ram and all the PCI-Ex lanes ... even if they don't really do anything any faster ... psychologically all the Sandy stuff always looked like a 'step down' to me, even though it really wasn't ... I just could never warm up to idea of losing a memory channel and a buncha PCI-Ex lanes ... I expected to always be getting moar of everything like that, not less tongue.gif
