I'd love to, but my monitor is currently 1680x1050. Upgrade to come later. And yes, I'd personally go higher than 2GB for future proofing. Depends how long into the future you want to proof, obviously. And if you do modding. And your resolution. And your preferred settings. Well, you get the point.

You don't need a discrete video card at all to run a computer. Actually you don't need a computer at all to survive. That is not the point at all. If I want to play at these settings with these mods, it seems I need more than 2GB.

You'll be fine with 2GB if you are okay with turning down AA, SSAO and stay off some of the higher resolution texture packs. That is obvious, but the point is that it is perfectly possible to use more than 2GB, so some people will want to consider it based on their needs.
