I'd love to, but my monitor is currently 1680x1050. Upgrade to come later. And yes, I'd personally go higher than 2GB for future proofing. Depends how long into the future you want to proof, obviously. And if you do modding. And your resolution. And your preferred settings. Well, you get the point.

You don't "need" 2+ GBs of VRam because you don't "need" 8xMSAA to play a game.

You don't need a discrete video card at all to run a computer. Actually you don't need a computer at all to survive. That is not the point at all. If I want to play at these settings with these mods, it seems I need more than 2GB.

You'll be fine with 2GB if you are okay with turning down AA, SSAO and stay off some of the higher resolution texture packs. That is obvious, but the point is that it is perfectly possible to use more than 2GB, so some people will want to consider it based on their needs.

Turn AA down, what you mean from 16x to 8x, where there are differences most cant even spot , and the same goes for 8x to 4x. 4x is really all you'd want without wasting tons of power on making jugs/apples/chickens looks sharper. 16x/16x is bordering on useless, as well s 8x/8x IMO. plus what are your options? most card are coming with 2gb vram, should you just completely ignore all the amazing 2gb cards out there because 16xaa may not run well? i know we are all about going all out here on OCN, but now suggesting 2.5gb+ VRAM for gpu's, especially for 1080p, is silly

You may not see any difference between 4x and 8x AA and AF in the games you play at your monitor, but I see the difference very clearly on mine.

Please do not mistake this thread for being a "YOU NEED 4GB OF VRAM NOW!!"-thread. I'm just putting out the data, it is up to each individual to decide if they think they might want more than 2GB. I think I do.

You are correct, there is a major difference between 8x and 32xCSAA even...

BFBC2 shows this hugely, i use a 21.5" 1080p screen, and yet i see clear differences.

Vram usage is almost always incorrect for the most part, most games cache the textures into the frame buffer, making newcomers think it is using all of their memory.
It is just a more efficient use of the framebuffer.

VRAM usage is correct, although the game might still be able to run while using less of it. Maybe with a performance hit, maybe not. I'd love to have a 2GB card so I could tell you how that works out for Skyrim, but I haven't.

In any case, when games show up as using 2.6GB of VRAM today, what is the requirement for maxing out games tomorrow? I just know I'd not feel future proof with 2GB.

This has been discissed many times. These programs such as msi afterburner don't accurately depict actual memory usage.

This discussion must have eluded me. What is it that is inaccurate about the measurement?

When I used my GTX 260, EVGA Precision X seemed more than accurate enough at the VRAM limit. Usage hit card's max, and soon after FPS plummeted.

I'm really glad I saw this thread because I have been wondering this exact same thing about modded Skyrim. I was thinking about buying a 670 2GB soon (currently running a 460 1GB and it just isn't enough, even with the light version of the 2k texture pack). Is there anyone who recently ordered/has a 670 2GB that mods skyrim a lot who can share some insight into this?

Hi guys,

So if i currently have a 1680x1020 monitor (MAY upgrade to a 1920 res. monitor in a yr or 2)

and play mainly starcraft 2, dota 2 (currently betaing), and diablo 3

how does my build look?

Case: Corsair 600T
CPU : i5 3570K 3.40 GHz (OC to 4.0ghz approx)
Mobo : ASUS P8Z77-V LX (not planning to SLI)
Mem: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance
SSD: Intel 520 120gb
HD: 1 TB regular harddrive
random DVD RW
Radeon HD 7850 2GB
Corsair A50 120mm Fan heatsink
600w Corsair GS

1. My question is, 7850 will be ok with the 600w, but if i were to go 560 TI OC, will it exceeed 600w?

2. Also if i were to do replace my 7850 with a better card 2 yrs down the road, will 600w cutting it?

3. How easy is it to swap power supply?

thanks guys!
