Upgrading from 5850, should I go with 7850 or 670? Or something else?

Hey guys, finally getting around to upgrading my computer which has lasted me 5+ years now. I've got a 3570K, Sabertooth Z77, Samsung 830 256GB, Corsair H100, and 16GB Crucial DDR3 1866 RAM on the way and wanted to know what would be a good graphics card to pair with this setup. I've read the 7850s overclock like crazy, and the reviews of the 670 have all been nothing but positive. I just don't want to get bottlenecked by either or purchase more GPU than I actually need.

I've got one monitor at 2560x1440 and have no intention of running multiple monitors. The games I will be playing are things like Diablo 3, TF2, Skyrim, Portal 2, BF3, etc. Other than gaming all I do on this computer is chat and surf the net. No movies no photo/video work or anything like that. I'd like to run all my games at max or close to max settings.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think the consensus on the 7850 is that it is over priced and if they were to lower the price some it would definitely be worth the money, i think.

for 7850 price..you could go a little higher and do 7950
or 6970 i believe..
IMO..It's overpriced..There are better solutions.Maybe the 670..IDK..that's new stuff there wink.gif

HD 7850/7870
They are gonna have to lower the price of the 7850 some time, the fact that it is price so high makes me wanna say cures words. hopefully when they do drop the prices it won't be too late. I've always like x850 series since first got my first 4850, then several years later cfx only made it better.

If you want a good card with no future concerns of bandwidth constraints don't hesitate and get the Sapphire HD 7970 OC at USD 449

Great card with huge OC potential and superb perf

If you want some idea of how bandwidth can affect perf

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/7

"While Crysis was a strong game for the GTX 580, the same cannot be said of the GTX 680. NVIDIA is off to a very poor start here, with the Radeon HD 7970 easily outperforming the GTX 680, and even the 7950 is tied or nearly tied with the GTX 680 depending on the resolution. On the bright side the GTX 680 does manage to outperform the GTX 580, but only by a relatively meager 17%.

Given the large gap in theoretical performance between the GTX 680 and GTX 580, as it turns out we’ve run into one of the few scenarios where the GTX 680 doesn’t improve on the GTX 580: memory bandwidth. In our overclocking results we discovered that a core overclock had almost no impact on Crysis, whereas a memory overclock improved performance by 8%, almost exactly as much as the memory overclock itself"

Bandwidth is a concern which shows in games like Crysis warhead , metro 2033 . It will do more so in future games especially at high res like 2560 x 1440. thumb.gif

Thanks for the replies smile.gif

The reason I was thinking 7850 was because I thought there was a thread somewhere about how the 7850 overclocks like crazy and can reach 7950 levels? Or is that the 7950 that overcolcks well?

HD 7850 is never going to get even close to a HD 7950 when both cards are OC'd. they are leagues apart smile.gif HD 7950 will beat GTX 670 clock for clock. HD 7950 OC editions can do 1150 - 1200 Mhz with msi afterburner. will beat GTX 670 OC at 1250 clocks.

if your budget is around USD 400 get the Sapphire HD 7950 OC (950 Mhz) which costs USD 409.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102991

But if you can afford USD 449 just go for the Sapphire HD 7970 OC thumb.gif

Stay with the 5850 till you can afford a 7950 IMO
post #10 of 11
7850 will be fine with 1080p, but 1440p its better to have a gtx670 or a 7950.
