Did some reading, realized my PSU is overkill, suggestions?

Ok, right now I have a Rosewill BRONZE Series RBR1000-M back when I started my build. Got it as I was going to go SLi and a bunch of other things. Well that didn't end up happening, and I now have my build as you can see below, I'm def realizing that my PSU is probably overkill for what I have. Remember reading somewhere that a PSU that is "over-powered" could actually harm a system?

I highly doubt I will be going SLi anytime, but want to leave headroom for that just in case. My PC is everything that's in the sig, plus 4x200mm fans, the h100 has 4x120mm fans, an extra 120mm fan for GPU and a 140mm exhaust fan. And of course almost everything will be OC'd in some form or fashion.

I'm thinking a 850W would probably be good. Opinions from anyone the wisemen of the forum? biggrin.gif

850w should give you plenty of power (and then some) for what you currently have. You'll have headroom for the future, too.

No harm will come to any hardware by using a power supply that is capable of producing more power than you need.

Overkill on a PSU will only hurt your wallet since you shelled out for it. If you're worried about efficiency, you may save a couple bucks a year by getting a smaller unit, but most likely not. Since you have it already you might as well keep it unless you need some features it doesn't have.

It won't harm your system the PSU just won't be running efficiently since PSU's works better under 60-90% load. It MIGHT degrade the life of your PSU by an negligible amount, but you should have nothing to worry about.

Main reason I'm looking to switch is just because i've been reading up on Rosewill products (specifically this PSU) and just read a few things that started to get me worried. Build quality and false advertising of certain "components" of the PSU. I'll see if I can find the links again.

Yeah, Rosewill products have always been somewhat of a taboo for people here (and most places where people know what they're doing).

But then again, most PSUs aren't even made by the company that sells them. I'd just check to see if the one you have is a good rebranded model, and if it isn't then consider getting a different PSU if that worries you too much.

Your PSU is far from brilliant, but it's not a poor unit, it's a solid one that can continuously output 1KW, there's no reason to change it.

An overkill PSU wont harm anything, your just wasting money on your electrical bill because it's not operating at it's peak efficiency.

But I would avoid the hassle of returning/selling/removing/installing and just stick with it.
