Little help on new build

Thread Starter
Hi everyone!

I'm going to build a new systeem soon but before I buy it I need to make sure everything fits and will work together.

This build is going to be used for mainly gaming

CPU: Intel i7 2600K
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100 Watercooling
GPU: Nvidia GTX 670
MB : Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
RAM: Corsair Dominator 2x4GB 1600mhz
HDD: WD Caviar Blue WD10EALX
SSD: Corsair Force 3 120GB
PSU: Corsair Professional Series HX850W
CASE: Corsair Obsidian Series 650D

Most probably going to SLI this when one single card can't handle everything on max settings

Please tell me if this is a good build and If you have suggestions please post them because this is my first build!

Thanks in advance

Since this is a new build, you can go straight to an ivy bridge instead of, still being on a sandy bridge build, so that you can take advantage of the pcie 3 capability of the videocard, if this is a gaming rig, core i5 3570K + gigabyte z77 ud5, will fit your budget, there's no much performance difference between a HT cpu & non HT cpu on games.
The psu will be more than enough even for a sli gtx 670.
As for the rest of the build it is decent.

I agree with Xnuw. Go for a Z77 MoBo, otherwise when you wanna upgrade your PC again in the coming years, you'll have no choice but to upgrade your MoBo again. And since this is a completely new build, you might as well build it future-proof(-ish). Go for an i5 3570K if you're a little bit on a budget, or for the i7 3770K if money isn't a problem. Although, if money isn't a problem, I'd recommend the ASUS Z77 Sabertooth instead of the Gigabyte one mentioned above. Looks awesome and has good overclocking potential.

Me personally, I'd recommend you the Crucial M4 128GB over your Corsair one, although coming from a HDD they'll both be huge improvements, but I have the M4 myself and I love it.

It could just be my own opinion (read: not sure if others share this opinion) but I find 200 dollars for a mere midi-case a lot of money. 200$ for a full or ultra tower, no problem, but for a midi-tower? Instead go for the NZXT Switch 810. Much more cooling potential and it's only a bit bigger, and it's 30$ cheaper.

And on a side note: I don't think you should expect your GTX 670 card to run slow any year soon now. smile.gif

I recently read a review on the Sandy / Ivy bridge CPU's and they found that the i7 (with HT on) was actually worse than the i5 in gaming. To achieve the same results, you would have to turn the HT off. If you have no other use for the i7 (tasks that will actually use all of the threads) then I'd probably go for the i5. They're substantially cheaper too, so you could use the extra money to up your graphics card purchase.

However, the current graphics card you have chosen is very good value and not a bad choice at all. However, like I said above though, if you can save money on the CPU you could possibly go for a GTX680.

An 850 power supply is more than you need for this particular build and you could do with a smaller one. A good quality 650 would be do the job fine and provide a little headroom for smaller upgrades. If you wanted to go SLI down the road with 670's then a 750w or 800w would be a great unit (even then may still be more than enough).

Hope I helped.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($189.99 @ Microcenter)
Unless you plan on rendering then get an i5. if you are near a Microcenter you can get the 3570k for $190 of not just get one at tiger direct for $210

CPU Cooler XSPC Rasa 750 RS240 ($129.99 @ FrozenCPU)
Much better then the H100 and you can upgrade the loop if you ever need to.

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($129.99 @ Newegg)
better price/performance and can OC well. $90 if you but with the 3750k at Microcenter.

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Basically the same performance but this one is cheaper.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($89.99 @ NCIX US)
Reliable 1tb hdd

SSD: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Better performance then the one you listed and better price.

Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($399.99 @ Newegg)
Best cooler and clocked the highest for the price. if you can find them in stock they are the best price/performance but if you can wait or can't find one get a 7950.

Case: Corsair 650D ATX Mid Tower Case ($159.99 @ Microcenter)
This case and the NZXT Switch are really good.

Power Supply: Kingwin 1000W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($119.99 @ Microcenter)
A modular 1000w 80+ bronze psu whose OEM is Super Flower(good). You can definitely sli with this psu. Its a lot cheaper then the one you listed and its better

Optical Drive: Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ Amazon)
cheap CD/DVD drive that does the job unless you want blueray

Total: $1,394.9

Hi,

Thanks for you help!

The reason I picked the case is because I really like it and I like the cable managment options.

I want to match all the collours together in this build, soft blue and black

I changed to Motherboard to ASRock Z77 Extreme4 as you recommended me that one and I like the plain black and gold design.

I'm not sure about the CPU, I wont be rendering things much, only gaming... Still I want to be future proof so I think the i7 3770K is the best choice... but pretty expensive.

PSU is good like this, Silver/Gold rated enough to SLI in the future since the new generation cards are more ''green''

Since I live in The Netherlands I can't buy from newegg frown.gif

CPU: Intel i7 3770K
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100 Watercooling

CASE: Corsair Obsidian Series 650D
+ some fans and dvd

Total: EUR:1593
Total: USD:2027,58

I think the difference in peformance is clear and the extra money will be well spend on the more expensive build with more future proof hardware smile.gif

For some reason the price dropped 30 euro's so the price is almost the same! biggrin.gif good for me!

If you are looking to save money, i5's and i7's offer little difference for gaming. Hyper threading does not help in games, most games still are only optimized for two cores.

Also, You can run a 670 SLI setup on a 700W Quality PSU with ease. If you really care about the environment and saving a few scraps on your power bill, grab AX/HX PSU, otherwise, a TX750 will be more than enough.

Grab a Crucial M4, Plexor M3 or Samsung 830 SSD.
