Lag Spikes during game

Hey all,

I have just built a new pc, and i have installed the new MOH and Starwars old republic.

and i every so often (on both games), maybe 15 minutes into game play, i start to get little lag spikes where the graphics and also the sound starts to crackle, these last for a couple of seconds and then it goes ok. after that they seem to happen at random times.

any ideas?

i have googled this and it has come up with so many answers, i have no idea where to start. . . . mad.gif

It could be your hard drive shutting off automatically and then causing a lag spike when it needs to spin back up.

System specs?

Only thing I can make out that you have is a FX processor.

Sorry not been on for a while

FX8120
Asrock 990fx extreme3 mobo
8gb corsair vengence
msi 6850
ocz 650w psu
be quiet dark rock advance cpu cooler
ocz 60gb SSD

i am starting to think this could be the cooling. i bought some better thermal paste and although the lag still happens, it isnt quite as bad.

i will try the stock cooler and see how that goes.

thanks for the replies

Dude. Thermal paste is about the last thing that will cause lag spikes.

Need more information to help you. A persons definition of a lag spike varies greatly. It could be one of many problems. We need more specific information about when it happens, on what games, the symptoms etc...

when i took the cooler off the paste that was on there just looked like dried milk, all i was saying is that when i put the better paste on it seemed to of eased the lag.

I am finding this very strange as i play MOH online and i dont suffer any lag. but playing GTA IV, after about 15 minutes of game play it will lag for a couple of seconds and then go perfect. it will then happen at random intervals.

when the problem originally started the sound would also crackle but this seems to of stopped.

one thing i have noticed is the heat pipes on the CPU cooler are practically cold, i have tightend it as much as it will go so i am guessing it is sitting as good as it will get. i am going to try the original cooler later and see if this helps.

Well i have finally sorted the problem!

I put the stock cooler on and the problem was solved. Even though the CPU is running slightly hotter i just dont get the lag. Very strange i know! but we did test after test and we concluded that this was 100% the problem!

it biscally lagged like hell on the physics test on 3d mark 11. and having got a better result when putting better thermal paste on we put 2 and 2 together and changed the cooler. I am guessing it just wasnt touching the cpu enough even though the screws were as tight as they could go.

Anyway, i am chuffed to bit its not a hardware malfunction and when i take this cooler back i may just walk out with a corsair H60 cooler biggrin.gif
