$3,000 gaming/programming build. (8 needless cores of fun!)

Thread Starter
A little background:

  • This is my buddy's computer that I put together.
  • I'm not an experienced builder - i've put together 2 computers previously to this. Forgive me, some parts may be out of place smile.gif And I will be asking some questions, as a few problems have been presented with this build.
  • He's been wanting to build a PC for years now, and he decided it was time, as this is his preparation for Diablo 3, hehe.

Theoretical builds we played around with first:
BUILD ONE
340

BUILD TWO
321

** As you can see, we both had our hearts set on this case. I remember when I first saw it, I was in awe.
*** I was also pushing a quad-core very hard. This is going to be used primarily for gaming, and programming. A quad-core is more than enough to handle both, I've found. The guy at the store really sold us the idea of the CPU we ended up getting hehe, it was a vain purchase, and made us both happy.

FINAL BUILD:

CPU: AMD FX 8150 (8-Core@3.6GHz)
CPU Fan: Noctua NH-D14 - (was literally drooling when we unboxed this beast).
MoBo: ASUS Crosshair V
GPU: Sapphire HD7970 (3GB - 925 MHz core clock)
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw X series 16GB (2 x 8GB) @ 1600 MHz - this made me giggle. The plan was 8GB@2133MHz
HDD: WD Black 1TB 7200RPM
SSD: Intel 520 Series - 120GB (550mb/s read, 520mb/s write)
Case: Thermaltake Level 10 GT (Easily my favorite part of the build -this case was a ******* blast to work with)
PSU: Corsair HX1050
CD-Drive: Asus Bluray/CD Combo
Keyboard: Razer Black Widow (the mechanical one, i picked one up too - typing this entire post has been a damned BLAST!)
Monitor: Acer 24"

PICUTRES:
Reserved for later, still have to take some more pics and put everything up

QUESTIONS
  1. We installed Windows 7 on his SSD. Everything's defaulting to SSD, i remember there was a way to change that - how exactly? (We set up the HDD as E:/ )
  2. His RAM was showing me a frequency of 687MHz - there's 1GHz missing - CPU-z and AMD Overdrive both confirmed this low speed. What can I do to change this, or even attempt to change this? What could be the matter here?
  3. AMD Overdrive is showing awesome temps, but it's pretty all over the place - 9 degrees, to 14, to 20, back down to 16, then to 9. All in the matter of like 10 seconds. Is the temperature supposed to be sporadic like this, or is this an indication of possibly screwing up the thermal paste? Eitherway, we tested with prime95, and it barely pushed 25 degrees. Crazy airflow, and AMAZING CPU fan.
  4. ON AN UNRELATED NOTE: In MY PC (not the PC in this build, this is my friends) - with firefox and nothing else open, my temps are around 42-44. This is kind of ridiculous, I check the temps frequently, and never recall seeing temps like this - should I reapply the thermal paste? With prime95 maxing my cores, it sits at around 50-55, so why is it tripping so hard now? Usually, i see the cores all chilling below 10%, but right now, their pushing past half. Nothing is seemingly open - taskmanager comfirms this. Is there anything I can do or check here? What could the problem be?

COMMENTS
  • His 8 cores look SO sexy in AMD overdrive. I doubt he'd ever need more than 6 though hehe.
  • RAM is also overkill, but what the hell.
  • $3,000 is Canadian dollars. So it's like, 48 cents in America.

Thanks for looking!

If the ram is running that slow you have to change it in the bios. Shoot my ddr2 is running at 901 mhz. Barely any programs use 8 cores especially games. In most games the bulldozer is beat by the 2599k and runs close to a 920.

I'm aware nothing runs 8-cores lol. Very very aware of that. That's why I was pushing a faster 4.2Ghz quad-core over this one. But all of Toronto didn't have that damned CPU, and the guy at the store really sold the idea of having an 8-core to my friend, so he folded lol. It's not gonna hurt him in anyway, heh.

1: Sean Webster has a ssd guide to set everything up.

2:DDR stands for double data rate which means you double any number you get for ram so yours is running at 1372(probably 1333 and the ram is at 666).

3: that is normal

4: any addons or anything? They may be sucking up CPU. If not try a clean install of the os.

And finally if you want better performance for the same price get a 2500k and extreme3 gen3 the 2500k is way faster clock for clock and oc's higher iirc.

Why don't you go with Intel? They have better performance than the Bulldozer offers. And this is just my opinion, but the GT case is UGLY!
you will have to set the dram frequancy in Bios the board defaults to 13333

There have been one or two of the top of the line intel duo series cpus that have actually outperformed some of the bulldozer 8 core processors. So idk about that.

Either way, you will still get some nice performance outta that. Nice build!

He's already bought the processor, let's keep the intel vs AMD out of this thread.

If you need any help overclocking the processor, be sure to check out the AMD FX Owner's Club. Also feel free to PM me with any questions, I've played with my 8150 tons.

Depending on work loads, there are some tweaks that can be done to boost performance a little.

For programming, encoding, or any sort of multithreaded tasks, bulldozer is great, especially the 8 core. It lags behind Intel for gaming though.

The ram should show a frequency of 800 MHz, if it's rated for 1600 MHz divide that in half because of double data rate (I think that's the reason, in any case, divide in half). Sounds like the motherboard just defaulted to that frequency, you can adjust all that stuff in the bios.

For the SSD, check out Sean's guide.

Having the temps fluctuate is normal, but are those numbers delta temps or what?

And as far as that psu goes, are you planning on having a second 7970 at some point? If you aren't, 1050W is way overkill. You would've been fine with ~700W I think.
