Confusion regarding memory

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hey all,

I recently purchased some memory from new egg.

This one exactly: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226295

However, despite the fact that it was supposed to be DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800), I see different values in CPU-Z.
Images of which are below.

Can anyone explain this discrepancy? Why is it advertised as PC3 12800 but I get max Bandwidth as PC3 10700??

The RAM is mounted on a Maximus IV Extreme

Did you manually set it to that specific clock speed and timings on your BIOS? It is advertised to run at the rated speeds, but your motherboard may not set it to the advertised speed automatically.

I have verified and everything in the BIOS is set to default or AUTO including memory frequency.

The sticker on the memory stick indicates that the memory should indeed be PC3 12800 8-8-8-24

yes, you have to go to the bios and set it manually to the manufacturers specs.
another thing is get memtest or aida and tell us how fast it is (;

Like Kokin says, a lot of mobo`s automatically default to the next lowest setting. You will have to go into your Bios and manually change it- 800mhz X 2, not sure on the latency settings but you could try 9-9-9-27 to start. Mushkin makes great products and may even have suggestions on their website, also try one of the Forums may have the same type of question. It would be nice to know what your Rig configuration is when you post questions so please set up your rig using the Rigbuilder. Best of luck ! thumb.gifbike.gif

Some motherboards actually do run at 1600mhz speed right off the bat, but most do not.

@OP: Since you have everything on default/auto, make sure to manually set the timings to 8-8-8-24 (just follow the CPU-Z names as they should be the same names in the BIOS menu), test it out with Prime95 Blend for 30mins~1hr or just play games for a few hours and if nothing crashes, you should be good to go. thumb.gif

Edit: You can probably overclock it to 1866mhz or even 2133mhz, but you will have to loosen up the timings to 9-9-9-27 or even 10-10-10-28. If you do overvolt the RAM, make sure you do not get near 1.65V (RAM Voltage) or you risk frying the RAM and/or other components. You may have to increase your VTT voltage a little bit if you want to reach the higher speeds.
