I believe that AMD has the same policy behind the use of 3rd party coolers. Their stock fans have a serial number on them that they pair with the CPU's serial number. Pretty much if you don't have the serial off the stock HS, you could be denied RMA.
I personally buy OEM CPU's over boxed ones when ever i can since I'm going to use a 3rd party cooler anyways for performance reasons, overclocking, and in some cases, much more quieter then the stock cooler. *cough* Phenom II stock coolers gunner2.gif

yeah phenom coolers are loud as F19 flying over your head ( using it still) biggrin.gif

at least in the sticky, make sure to tell people to not disclose the use of aftermarket fans or heatsinks if possible

Actually I don't think it's wise for OCN to encourage people to lie when asking for RMA. We all know what you should and should not tell to intel when RMAing.

waw... unbelievable. well... i am sorry that was your case, but i had to +rep you for sharing this critical info with OCN. i surely know what to answer now if i had a processor fail and requesting RMA from Intel. good luck there buddy.

This. Very common indeed. If you don't use the stock cooler, there's no way for Intel to know if you installed the third party cooler properly, whether it is compatible with the socket, has proper fan installed, proper TIM application, etc etc.

but how would they know you installed the standard cooler properly? if its an installation issue, the user still has to install the stock cooler by hand

also

in the sticky, dont encourage lying in the rma, just encourage not disclosing anything you dont have to, its different then lying

Thats odd.. I have returned many many cpus and most times I just grab random box stock fan and they take it just fine. I know for a fact that most of mine don't match serial numbers. Well.. live and learn.
