need suggestions for linux + lamp + file server

Hello,

With no intentions to spam this Forum, I am reposting it for some suggestions. previously I posted it under Speciality-> Servers but got ZERO responses.

I need suggestions to chose right hardware in a cost effective manner for a machine to be used as Staging/development server. Machine will be installed with CentOS, LAMP, Samba and SVN. We have 15 PHP developers at our office and will have few external users at times to check the work we are doing. PHP developers will work on their own desktops but will commit/transfer the updated files once every day to server.

Important for us is to take daily backup(s) of the entire hard disk if possible or smart backups of the updated/edited files only. So, if you can please recommend an internal/external hardware for backup? We will stop taking individual backups once this is setup

We will not be doing any gaming or streaming. but I guess the backup process will be eat a lot of resource as thousands of php, html, javascrip files will be existing (from old projects as well as under development projects)

I was thinking of Xeon/i7 but then I got to know about AMD FX 8150 (8 core and 8mb L3 cache). AMD is very cost effective but would it be suitable for an internal server with no more than 20 users at any time.

so the suggestions needed are for:
1) Cabinet with suggested cooling
2) Motherboard
3) Processor
4) HDD
5) HDD/Raid device for Backup
6) Ram
7) Secondary Lan Card.

In coming months, I am also planning to buy a entry level Netgear firewall that we will be the first point of contact for any external users (If it was any important to tell).

Thanks in Advance.

At stock speeds, the Xeon/i7 will beat the Bulldozer hands down in performance. If you decide to overclock then Bulldozer's power consumption and heat will rise quite a bit if ever your server was under heavy load.

I'm running my FX-8150 as a server right now for Apache, LAMP, Media Server, FTP, Rendering/Encoding, and folding.

I would have to recommend looking for a deal on a 1156 or 1366 Xeon platform or even a cheap 2P AMD setup.

As for other components, you can probably find a motherboard with dual-gigabit. And definitely look in to a dedicated hardware raid card, Adaptec has some nice ones around the $500 mark.

I would go for a WDC Green maybe 2TB then a ssd or a WDC Black the ssd maybe 128G or then WDC Black maybe 500G-1TB.
an fFX-8120 for a server maybe a better bet and you could overclocking it to the same frequency as the FX-8150.
Otherwise AMD are should be coming out with a Opteron for the AM3+ socket which will be optimized for servers.

Thanks axipher and QuietlyLinux.

While the server won't be doing much most of the time (except running SVN and LAMP), everyday few programmers will be pushing their work from desktop(s) to the server. a tester will be doing all the testing work on developer(s) work on the server directly.

One major thing that server will be doing everyday is to take backup (once a day I am planning).

So, I am not very sure if I will be needing the stock speed more or to overclock. Frankly, i even don;t understand their meanings much biggrin.gif

I am based in New Delhi, India, and the vendors are just the sellers and have not much knowledge so they recommend branded servers like HP and Dell.. I, on the other side, do only PHP development and thus have no idea about Servers/Hardwares frown.gif

There wont be any media played/streamed or traffic on this server. this will be merely used as a file server (thousands of small files of few kbs each) and LAMP for testing.

So, if you could be please more precise on what hardware you suggest in terms of Processor/Motherboard/Ram and Raid device.

I was also wondering if there's a way to take ghost backups instead of files? as a snapshot of whole HDD instead of files individually.

Thanks in advance,
Bipul
