[TPU] GeForce GTX 670 Doesn't Support 4-way SLI, Possible with Future Driver Update

Apparently NVIDIA wrote to some tech publications, such as PC Perspective at the last moment before GeForce GTX 670 launch (we didn't receive such a communication), telling them that the GPU does not support 4-way SLI. The email read "As I’m sure you can imagine, we have to QA every feature that we claim support for and this takes a tremendous amount of time/resources. For the GTX 680 and GTX 690, we do support Quad SLI and take the time to QA it, as it makes sense for the extreme OC’ers and ultra-enthusiasts who are shooting to break world records."

The 670 lands in the market niche of single card users who want a powerful option without (arguably) overspending. This incompatibility is not an issue whatsoever.
Four card scaling is usually horrible anyway, especially on new cards.

I really don't see the point of 4 way sli, since scaling between 2-way and 3-way sli only adds around 4% more performance, so there's no reason. If people have the money they're going to buy quad 680s or dual 690s.

This, who buys 4 cards for gaming anyway... another $400 for a 25% gain.
If AMD would have had a problem like this, the nVidia boys would have thrown all their best dirt at them and few cheap shots every now and than.

Saying 4th card scaling is bad, is not a reasonable argument.
Saying that if you can afford 4 of 670's, you can buy 680's is not a reasonable argument.

The technology isn't working as it should, that is the problem - no matter how you try to overlook it. From what I understand, 670 performs very much like the 680 but 20% cheaper. I would like to see how they compare against the 680's in quad SLI.

If you think that quad sli is pointless you're missing the point.

Or, in my case, people side-grading from SLI GTX 680's (reference) to oc'd custom-cooler Gigabyte GTX 670's with 680-pcb'd boost-out-of-box-to-high-speeds in SLI like I did. I sold my two GTX 680's for a nice profit on ebay (around $60 each after fees/shipping are all done with), and have additionally saved $100 extra per card from the switch. Ended up with nicer cards too that are quieter/cooler thanks to the nice hsf/etc., and the speed they're running at is within 1-2% either way (above and below, in tests) which is nothing, in my system. biggrin.gif

I agree with most people on here. Anyone who is wealthy enough to do Quad SLI in the first place, will most likely be doing it with 680's. No great loss IMO.
